More accurate title for this thread: "Don't let anyone discourage you if you live in Northern Ohio"

Many companies local to me are closing down and selling equipment because the work just isn't there anymore.

Sorry about that, but anyway - like I said, I'm usually home by 3 or 4pm.
It's surprising to me that Northeast Ohio is so much busier than the rest of the U.S.

Something I hadn't considered. I will count myself as lucky, then.

The way I calculate if it's worth it:

Cost of fuel plus $70 per hour including drive time, and load and unload times. If it meets that criteria then I haul it. If it doesnt, then I tell them what I need. My guess would be that 80% of the time, I get the load.

    For example

Today I'm on my 2nd load. This particular load picked up in Sharon Center and is going to Akron. 15 miles. 20 miles from where I was. Total miles: 35. (Only 15 to get back home btw) 35x2.40 per gallon ÷ 7 miles per gallon=$12.00

1/2 hour to get here, 45 minutes to load, 1/2 to get to receiver then 45 minute unload =2 5 hours x $70 = $175.

    Load pays $250

Not all loads are this close, but the math is always the same.

Interesting system. I figured your way on some local freight I run every now and then and it's competitive. It would book the loads. Some of the places can be hit or miss on time though so it really sucks when you misjudge. When I was working like that I'd usually leave around 06:30-07:00 and put in 12-14 hour days most days, on mis-judged times. So I bumped my rate on that stuff and hardly ever get it any more. Some of it I just refuse to haul period when I was new I didn't know any better. It was nice to be home often and make a decent settlement but it was work.
