With electronic logs (at least with my system) the only time that really "matters" is your driving time, which is automatically captured by the QC and noneditable. When you view your logs (we don't have the fancy new QCs with the progress bars), it just shows timestamps and the corresponding line that you went to at that time. So it might be like:

13:05 3 (woke up after loading and started driving)
    09:34 2 (went to take a nap)
09:26 4 (checked in at shipper)
    07:45 3 (started driving)
    07:30 4 (woke up)
    00:00 2 (sleeping)

Everything that wasn't on line 3 is editable, you just send a message with the timestamps and lines you want to change it to. Then an "E" will show up next to that line letting everyone know that you edited it. Sometimes it's very useful, like maybe you arrived at a consignee and ended up waiting 6 hours to be unloaded, but forgot to take yourself off line 4 after you checked in. So that's 6 hours that are accidentally counting against your 70, so you could go back and retroactively put yourself on line 2 for instance.

When you first come on duty in the morning it sends a message with your previous day's logs, showing the miles driven, driving time, on duty time, and total on duty time.

Not exactly correct. For the 14 hour, all time less than 10 consecutive hours off duty will count towards the 14 hour.

all time less than 8 hrs in the sleeper will count towards the 14 hour clock.

    all time driving and;

all time on duty not driving.

Basically once you start your day, your 14 hour clock is ticking. The only way to "stop" the 14 hour clock is a period of sleeper that is 8 consecutive hours or more, but less than 10 hours (8 hrs to 9.75 hrs), then all the time up to that point will be counted once you start driving again towards your 14 hour clock. You will then need to have a 2 hr sleeper, off duty or combination of the two periods before you hit the 14th hour or 11 hr driving mark.

That is incredibly stupid because it encourages some one not to stop and rest when they are tired.

Funny how I was bashed over my speeding tickets in my 4 wheeler but people will pad the log book like that's not a saftey issue! Which is worse or more dangerous?

Driver until you have dealt with the hours of service first hand you wont understand.

Speeding is one thing, that means you were going waayyyy too fast.

It is another determining when you are or are not too tired to opperate your truck, and then trying to make it fit inside the cookie cutter they give you.

platinum imo opinion there is no difference.....you either can safely speed or you cant....and you can either safely run over your log without sleeping or you cant....both of which can be unsafe

I'm just telling you how the law is, if you don't like it I guess don't drive. I don't make the law, you don't make the law. Someone, somewhere who makes a lot more money than any of us does. It is what it is, I have to enforce the law the way it's written.

I am just venting a little, I have been off the road for a couple of years, and I am one of those who does understand that it is your job to enforce it, not to write it.

I am in the Wrecker business now, I deal with LEO's all the time, I do know one thing you all have in common with truckers and the military, is that it is a thankless profession.

I will be going back on the road next year, im getting caught up on all the changes since I came off the road, I really miss the 5 and 5 sleeper brith, I could run pretty hard with that rule and still get good sleep.

My biggest complaint is they keep changing the rules at the drop of a hat.

I have read a lot of your posts and man it cracks me up seeing what some people pull, and it really has made me understand why what you do is a nessacary evil, because there are those out there who are total and complete idiots behind the wheel.

As well I will say that another thing truckers, law enforcement and the military all have in common is that when one of us messes up bad, does something wrong and it makes the news, we all tend to suffer for the bad publicity caused by one idiot that is an acception to the rule, yet we dont get the good publicity that goes with silently doing our jobs and doing them right.

You're 100% right. You should be bashed for both of them. They are both equally wrong.

Running illegal depends alot on what you're doing. Before I got lucky and retired I hauled gasoline and everyone I knew there ran legal or did their best to run legal. That's other companies too because we all loaded out of one place and when a driver did something illegal and was caught we all knew it right away. However, we were paid by the hour and not by the mile. There was no reason whatsoever to run illegal.
