gar-rose,
I was talking in terms of trucking companies and only trucking companies. And yes, I was generalizing to a certain extent. I also realize that good trucking companies will, at times, find the need to advertise.
Having said that, I was gearing my post towards truckstop magazines. Personally, I would avoid any company that advertises in that type of media. Even in this economy, they continue to advertise for driving positions? Does anyone ever stop and think why? Why do they continue to do it? I contend that it is a reflection of what I posted earlier and to which you quoted here.
If you look under the "bad company forum", you will find just about all of them listed in any given truckstop magazine. While I am sure that there are happy drivers that have been at those companies for a long time, many do not fit into that category. Why do you think that is the case?

They THINK it is an easy job, and to a certain extent, it is. But they fail to research the industry as a whole. They don't understand you will be expected to go to places that aren't nice or easy to access. They don't realize that you will be expected to spend weeks at a time away from home, and this is can be a strain on their family.
OTR driving is not like any other job (driving or otherwise). To be good at it, one must view it as a lifestyle, and the entire family must be able to embrace it.
When someone has a bad experience, especially newbies, they think it is ALL the companies fault. When in reality, they've had a bad experience due to their unrealistic expectations.
OTR driving, and dispatching is not a perfect science. Could companies do a better job of communicating to drivers? Without a Doubt. Could drivers not get their panties in a wad every time things don't go their way? WITHOUT A DOUBT!
I've never been a dispatcher. However, I've observed them do their job, and I would not want it!
My point, it's not always the companies fault.luvtheroad and TexomaOKie Thank this. -
My god, I would not want to be a dispatcher either. All the whinning drivers, along with the other day to day duties would have me fired in 1 day easy!

Think that dispatchers have the worlds worst job and especially in the big companies. Not only do they have to listen to us drivers whine and try to placate us, they also have to follow their own stupid policies that the comapny places on them. Talk about being between that proverbial rock and a hard place..........

JD u forgot to add dealing with bad shippers, lumpers, receivers, the HP, LE , DOT, weigh stations, lousy truck stops, etc, etc!!

Not only are unrealistic expectations part of their problems, also add NOT ENOUGH proper training. When one is not properly trained to do a job, any job, dealing with the pitfalls of that job can be devestating to a new hire. -
Of the items that were listed, do you think that much of the strain placed on drivers would be lessened if they were compensated for that time?
