Those of us who enjoy SIMPLE things, without making life overly complicated prefer paper. You know that look on the cashier's face when the total comes to $8.17 and you hand her a $10 bill and say "I think I have a quarter in my pocket..." but before you can pull it out, she's punched $10 and hit the button and now is looking at you like you're from another planet when you're trying to hand her that quarter? She hasn't the slightest CLUE how to make change...just does what the register tells her. These new drivers who have never used paper will have the same "deer in the headlights" look when (not if) that device fails because they won't KNOW what the rules are for keeping that log book...only what the computer says as far as whether or not they can drive and for how long. Ever go into a shipper or receiver during a power outage? Or when their computers are down? Whole place shuts down because nobody can do anything anymore without a #### computer telling them what or how to do it. Personally, I'd rather take the 2 seconds to draw a line on a page and NEVER have my "system" break. It isn't even a possibility on paper.
Extreme temperatures, dust, and vibration are some of the worst things for electronics. My truck does not have air conditioning, so it gets hot in the summer...and as a result, I roll with the windows open. Yes, that means if I'm doing site work it gets dusty inside. It also gets shut down every night when I go inside, so it gets cold in the winter. These ELD's are expensive...FAR more than the paper logs run me. The VDO system I was looking at was about 35 YEARS worth of paper logs just to buy it. Will it last 35 years? Probably not. If I go with PeopleNet like the carrier is pushing, sure they supply the device, but after 18 months paying the monthly fee I would've been better off buying the VDO system.
Then, there's the security aspect. "Connected" cars have been hacked. Hackers have even demonstrated the ability to gain control over passenger jets. My truck was built before this was a concern...anyone gaining access to the ECM was assumed to be hard-wired into it. It doesn't have the firewalls and barriers in place to defend against a hack...so WHY would I want to provide a back door? All someone who wants your load needs to do is hack in and choose a spot to kill your truck...or if they just want to post a video to youtube, wait until you start down a hill fully loaded, pin your throttle wide open, and start upshifting that automatic transmission you love so much. You think your brakes are going to do a #### thing against gravity AND the engine? You're just along for the ride until you crash...and then you're just dead. That's something I don't have to worry about on paper, or even with the VDO system. Cost being what it is, though, I prefer paper. I like to keep as much of what I earn as possible, and don't take kindly to others dictating an increase to my operating cost without providing ANY benefit. There is a negative ROI with ELD's for a small 1-truck operation.dca Thanks this. -
I hope you don’t have a cell phone or home computer.....

I fail to see where that is even remotely related.
