    I'm trying to get my brother a DOT number and I can't get through that unified carrier registration.

    It's saying something that with his social security number they have some other interaction with him but whatever it is I can't get a hold of anybody so I have no idea what they're talking about.

    It used to be you just filled out a form and they gave you a number, now they take you through this unified registration and there's 10,000 questions and nothing pertains to you except for that little tiny section for the DOT number...

    So they give me their nice customer service number because they want to give you great customer service and no one will answer the phone no one will call me back there isn't even a prompt for issues with new numbers any idea what I can do here?

    Is there somewhere in Harrisburg Pennsylvania but I can literally just drive to they will take care of this frigging Dot number?

    I have to go there probably on Friday anyway but this is terrible there's nobody to talk to there's nobody to ask.

    Are you asking about a US DOT number or a PA PUC number? Either way, no, there is no place to apply for one in person. The US DOT number must be filed with he FMCSA using their online portal unless you want to wait weeks for them to even begin processing it. If there is a problem with his SS number it may be because he had an old US DOT number, and if so, he can't get a new one he would need to reactivate the old one. Now, if he never had a US DOT number then I don't know what the problem might be.

    If it is a PA PUC number for intrastate only operation, they are very hard to deal with. Good luck.

    The best I can do is give you the local US DOT field office contact for Pennsylvania, You may have better luck calling them than the general customer service number. Call them, don't just show up, as they usually do not do in-person walk in visits.

    Hey that's awesome thanks Brian I appreciate it.

    He said years ago he had an F800 and a trailer that he used moving his own stuff locally and they gave him a hard time about the DOT number. I I figured maybe it was so long ago he doesn't remember so put his name in the system, but it didn't come up with anything except our long lost relatives.

    But as I write this I'm realizing he did the taxes for the farm on a profit and loss statement. He probably has an EIN number on that or we can maybe get one pretty quickly.

    They will allow me to give an EIN number rather than a social security number to give a new DOT number.

    Hopefully, that will solve the problem.

    If he has an EIN for the farm that is your best option, although if he did have a previous DOT number even under his SSN they may need to research and reactivate it. If it has been deactivated for more than 2 years it will not show up on a public search but the field office can find it.

    The farm he had just purchased so it was a zero amount of money schedule F. For whatever reason they did not give him an EIN number, so I got him an EIN number and that gave us the DOT number.

    @brian991219
    First thank you because we received our farm tag yesterday.

    Thank goodness I had everything that I needed but they gave us absolutely no hard time they agreed to the lease and they gave us the tag. The funny thing is Harrisburg gave us zero problem it was everyone else before we got to Harrisburg that had no idea what was going on. So thank you again.

    Now my question is how do I letter this truck?

    The farm is in my brother's personal name at this point and he does have a DOT number, so do I just put not for hire or private carrier and put his DOT number and that's it?

    Once we get that situated we're good.

    Now I know the farm situation is not your specialty Brian, so how can I find out all of the rules involved in this, like for example do I need a log book is there an exemption for so many miles, do I keep a manifest, how about record keeping requirements... how do I find out exactly what all the rules are with this Farm tag?

    I want to make certain that we are fully in compliance.

    But for right now the main thing is how to letter the truck and what doI need to put on it?

    *** another thing that I just thought of, is can I use the insurance that's on the tractor to maintain my authority?

    Right now I have insurance coverage on my F350 to retain the authority.

    The reason I ask about the insurance is because the insurance is actually in his name because the truck is leased to the farm. That's where my question comes in as to whether I can use that policy to retain my authority.

    Insurance, no, that has to be in your name to maintain your operating authority.

    Lettering, whatever the legal name of the operating motor carrier is, so if the DOT number is in your brother's personal name and you leased the truck to the farm (also your brother) then you will put;

    Operated By:
    Your Brother's Name
    US DOT Xxxxxx

    Put the name exactly as it is on the DOT number when you look at the MCS-150. If he has a dba "sample farm company" You could put that instead of his personal name if it is also listed on his current MCS-150.

    As for logging and such, you are correct, I am not up to date on any ag exemptions. Sorry I can't help you there.

    Hey Brian that's awesome.

    This has been so many headaches and confusion and through this whole thing no one really knew anything about it except for you.

    Your advice pointed us where we needed to be and it all came together, which has been great for everybody.

    So my brother and I sincerely thank you.
