I agree, the numbers for obesity has increased nationwide, and even more so for Truckers. But there are also people like my brother in law. The guys never been overweight, yet developed type 2 at 55 yrs old. Like any disease, there’s primary hereditary risks, and secondary behavioral risks, that can cause or accelerate the process. On the other hand, many like my Grandmother were Obese they’re entire lives. She lived to be 90, had high BP for 50 yrs. and an enlarged heart, yet She never developed type 2. Being overweight contributes, but doesn’t always cause it. I’m hoping for a cure. So much is unknown. Management is a full time job. Imagine, every time you eat, sticking your finger, testing BS, counting carbs of the meal your going to eat.Doing the math. Then injecting enough insulin to cover the carbs. Eat. Wait 20 minutes and test BS again. Then if it’s high or low, inject more insulin, or eat more carbs. Every time you eat. Even with Continuous Glucose Monitors, and Insulin Pumps, which cost $800, and only last for 3 mos. because the manufacturers put 3 mo. battery in them, and a kill timer on the program used to run them. They could last up to 2 yrs. with a better battery and no kill setting, There’s literally people that modify them, installing new batteries, and running a bootleg program, developed by a Diabetic programmer. All done underground, anonymously, because it’s illegal. it’s a constant thing. Never goes away. And there’s 2 types of insulin, one is taken nightly, the other is taken with meals. All together the insulin alone is $600-$800 a month. Test strips are expensive. Insurance generally covers only half the amount that’s needed. Some cover part of insulin cost, but still, even with the best policies, costs the patient at least $400 a month. It’s enough to cause high BP, just dealing with the Supplies, and the insurance companies. Not to mention the same Companies that make insulin are manipulating the food supply, to increase the amount of cases. There’s more than meets the eye going on with this Disease. A lot of moneys at stake. Not enough going towards finding a cure. No incentive. It’s a very sad situation.
