My B/P has been under control for years, but every time I go in for a DOT physical, it is high. Fortunately, the Doc knows that some have the "white coat syndrome". They take you to a quiet room with a nice vibrating recliner and have you relax. I when I woke up, the nurse was putting the cuff on my arm and my B/P was fine. Do the same thing every year.

I monitor my blood pressure about once a week at home. It’s always in the normal range. I monitor at different times of the day, I monitor it different positions, always within range. Typically in the morning when I first wake up, it’ll be something like 110/68. Go to the doctor, to do my exam, they come in. I hear that tearing sound of the cuff opening and I feel my heart starts speeding up. I’m not afraid to have my blood pressure taken. It’s just knowing that it needs to be a good low reading that causes it….by the time the pump starts pumping I can feel my heart pounding in my chest. Lol , usually I’m still under the cut off, but it’s right at the edge. Sometimes gotta sit for a bit. The last one I had, the doctor told me white coat syndrome is a real thing. It isn’t about being afraid of the doctor. It’s about being afraid of the #### numbers that are gonna pop up on that screen. 100% don’t have high BP, but if I ever did it would be visiting the doctor.

this happens to a lot of people they go to the doctor they get a high reading and then they get placed on blood pressure medication’s that they really don’t need and then their blood pressure runs too low. And then they have medical problems from that. It’s a real problem. The medical establishment needs to look at, allowing people to evaluate their blood pressure readings over long period of time and at home. Everybody’s blood pressure gets high occasionally, and if it happens to be when you go to the doctor, you’re gonna end up on medication you might not even need.

Water fast 24 hours prior, no caffeine/nicotine and parking
about a mile from the doctors office and walking there is
    my routine.
I drink a little water prior to the BP test and a lot more for
the blood sugar test. I also check it at home, the simple
act of putting on and taking of the cuff helps in reducing
anxiety, as it becomes a familiar routine.

The thing I don't understand is why they always seem to want to take your blood pressure the minute you walk into the exam room.. there should be a steadfast rule about this..
