Er, Rick, I took "combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more" to mean the truck and trailer together. Which means at 10k for the trailer that would put the truck at 16001lbs to require the CDL. Of course, that also is kind of strange since without a trailer, that would mean the truck would have to be in excess of 26k.

Again it means the truck and trailer together PROVIDED (meaning IF ) the trailer exceeds 10,000 lbs.. IF the trailer is u 10,000 lbs. or less it doesn't require a CDL
Class A -- Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds."
And I thought people had a hard time understanding the 30 minute break.

Ahh I see what you are saying. So even though the GVWR for the truck and trailer are over the 26k limit, because the trailer is under the 10k one it isn't a class A. And because the truck itself is under the 26k limit it isn't a class B.

Thats the argument I am against...now look at the is link
    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.aspx?reg=390.5

Go to definition of Commercial Vehicle.... now explain if you can....seriously and I dont mean in a smart ### way. This has been my understanding for years. In Texas once you break 26k gvwr or gcvwr...CDL. When cross state lines in furtherance of business, it drops to 10k GVWR or GCVWR per USDOT.
But now I can take 26k truck and a 10k trailer and no CDL?
I am not kidding here, for Texas/Louisiana hotshotters...lotsa money to be made. F-650 @26k with a 24' bed, carry 12k and a trailer carry 7k on a 10k rated trailer....and no DOT to mess with?? I can throw 19k of oilfield equipment on a combo rated at 36k and NO...,.CDL required.... for real?

Why do that? Why buy the Public liability insurance if you dont have too? Really think about it....No rules for 36k capacity and charge hotshot rates? Your missing the point I think, think about..no CDL, no public liability, no log books, no stopping at scales....notta
