While pre-pass may or may not be allowed for audits...is open for debate.
One thing I know for 100% certianty. When you pass a scale using pre-pass, it's logged into the data files at the scale. How this information is shared between others, I do not know.
I got to watch this in action in CO one fine evening, after I found out my permits weren't currentI did get an education out of it though, while I waited on the company to pony up the $$$.
It would be a simple script issue for someone to offer between scale timing/speed comparison to the state. And, have it calculate it automatically. It would also be easy to retrieve this information to be used in an audit, without having to ask Pre-Pass for the records.

As of April this yr CAT DID NOT time stamp their scale tickets. -
I've been told that OR uses their Norpass or what ever it is they have for tracking speeding etc. -
I don't know if this was an isolated incident with one DOT Officer, or they do it at all OR State scales if needed. But, the scales at Umatilla used it. -
Dance ,
I think you have stumbled onto the answer here .....True pre-pass doesn't give the info to DOT but , when the truck passes the transponder communicates with the scale and blammo!!! Now we have something to match with the logs !!!
Just say NO to prepass !!! This maybe a 5th amendment issue giving testimony to prosecute yourself. SELF-INCRIMINATION !! -
Hi all, just found this board looks like a great community. I also had an experience similar to Dances also in Colorado. Was running a 2 lane in S/E CO and we got a green lite on the pre-pass but there is a T/S between the PP poles and the scale ramp that we entered. Left the T/S about an hour later and decided to enter the scales just to be safe since it had been a while since getting the green lite to pass.
Well it was the middle of the night and guess he was bored cause he pulled us in. After checking paperwork (no problems) I asked him if I could have passed the scale since I got the green lite earlier. He said yes that he would have seen me and just checked the computer. He showed it to me, pulled up the screen and there I was, company name, truck#, said I got a green lite, and date time stamp. -
There used to be signs up in that truck stop about how long you could wait after getting a green before you had to go thru the scale. The last few times I was in the T/S the signs have been gone. (maybe a yr now) -
So you are saying they "stopped" time stamping them?
Double check the next one you get and look at the top # of the like 3 or 5 rows of numbers to the left side and see if the military time does not match the current time (well adding/subtracting the time zone you are in) of your watch.
Some will look like this
130200 (military hours, minutes & seconds)
& the other will look like this
1302 (military hours & minutes only)
Now the 2nd copie does not have the time as it is blackened out. If your company lets you turn in the 2nd copie then go for it. But still I don't want to help cheat I want to help drivers learn the right way.
-
Well I'll be. I never knew what that was. I thought it was part of a the scale code. And the second copy is blacked out. Thanks for telling me.
The DOT cannot force me to incriminate myself. I plead the 5th. -
When there's an audit/investigation, everything can be used. Pre pass & everything that looks like it can be used. Cat scale tickets can be used, they are timed & dated. You might not see the time on the ticket but the CAT scale system does. It's just a phone call away. When you pass thru a state scale, your truck numbers are entered into the computer & if someone wanted to, they could use it to measure speed across the state.
Qualcom can be used although most deny it. It gets thrown into the pile because the feds bully the safety guy into producing the records. If he doesn't, the feds promise to look even closer. It's extortion but what are ya gonna do? Who ya gonna call?
If your cellphone was used to call or receive a call from the company, it can be used as well. Newer cellphones supply GPS data on a regular basis. You can be tracked on that. It is legal for the feds to ask for that info from the cellphone company. Even the older phones can place you in an area at a certain time. Each cellsite tracks you & reports to the cell company. It's not as accurate as the GPS equipped phone but it won't be more than a couple miles or so in error. All of this is just a phone call away.
There's cameras along many interstates & main roads. They run continuously. You can view many of them over the web in real time. They are taped & digitally stored. All one needs is an aproximate time & they can find you. Then watch you pass each next one & use the pretty exacting GPS based times to nail you for speed or logging violations.
Big Bro is watching.possumgravy and Toomanybikes Thank this.
