Hello so just a little background I was In The trash industry for 6yrs started with Rolloff then I started driving a 48” Tipper trailer then I switched to our tanker division. Now I’m getting out of trash and just received an offer letter from FedEx pulling doubles to and from the hub in Hagerstown,MD about 100miles oneway about 2-3 trips per night. My question is what is it like driving doubles wat to look for I know backing a set is pretty much a no. I know heavy trailer first but what is it like day to day driving and how do they handle in different weather conditions?

I wouldn't worry about pulling them, millions of miles are put on doubles, I'd be more concerned with 2-3 trips a night over 100 miles. THAT, gets mighty old. I did a Madison to Milwaukee line haul, 2 trips a night, at night, nothing to see, more like a factory job. You don't back up doubles, you unhook them and spot them separately. ( PITA) In my 3 million+ miles, I never pulled more than one trailer at a time.

Thats going to wear on you plus the commute home. (Don't commute more than 30 minutes, especially that you are in a mountain valley with five ridges to cross on both sides of Hagerstown. Its going to be a battle when empty some days. Even for full 18 wheelers.

I was thinking that luckily I only have about a 10min commute home. But I thought that was quite excessive. When I did tanker work we would do 2 loads from crofton to sharpsburg and that was hell

don't make any quick moves of the steering wheel, you will get that tail trailer to go bonkers on you.

    straight and steady

Doubles are nice, just don't drive anywhere that you can't see a way out. if you do you will be breaking them down to get out. the 3 hooks and 3 drop will be a real pita.

    In MAryland? HAHAHA.

Sorry. Just had to get it out of my system.

I made a special goal not to touch doubles. We had CF Freightways in the area at one time and it was super intense in those days. I was not going to deal with it. My pa was so gaga over it back then. Ugh.

Doubles today isnt bad, just alot of thinking ahead. I prefer two full 48 trailers if I had to do doubles. Go big or go home.

Yeah, it's like motorcycles, you only hear of the disasters, but not the hundreds of thousands of safe riding. Don't get me wrong, there's several advantages to a job like that. A) you can't get lost, B) probably no scales to worry about, and rarely overweight anyway,C), momma likes it, because you'll be home for those "yes dear" jobs, and see the kids little league game, probably the most important reason to do it. FedEx going to be around a while, no work shortage there. Most trucking is repetitive anyway. Try dump trucks. I did 23 loads one day from one side of a pit to the other,,:biggrin_25518:
