Here we go again, instructors making broad statements that don't work in the real world.
A hill could mean anything from a mountain face to a small bump in the road. The most often time I can think of down shifting is when going down a hill with a stop at the bottom. I'll let the jake hold me back and when the RPM gets low enough I'll down shift and hit the jake again.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
The only time I have been unable to downshift on a downgrade is if it gets over a 20% grade. That has happened a few times on dirt roads leading to oil rigs or fracking sites, always when I am already in low range. That's the time to simply come to a stop and shift. 1st or 2nd with full Jake's and service brake, and interaxle differential lock engaged is the order of the day.

LOL.... wait a minute wait just one #### minute.maybe I have been out here just way too long .but what the hell is commentary driving ? is this some new breed truck driving school bullcrap they are teaching ?my God man ain't no #### wonder why we have nothing more than steering wheel holders out here nowadays .I have never in my almost 26 years out here now have ever heard of such a thing .commentary driving. somebody please please tell me what this isLast edited: Oct 27, 2016

Was part of the smith system -- you go for a drive and verbalize everything that might affect your driving. E.G. "I see the pedestrian light flashing, so that green light is probably going to be changing so I'll be prepared to stop..."Lepton1 Thanks this.

Okay thanks for the input I know what the Smith system is. May have even took it or should I say had it I guess I just never heard that term commentary driving. I guess after being out here so long, all the new crap they have out here nowadays was unheard of in my time. Thanks for clueing me in though. But then again what you told me sounds like nothing more than common sense.... but I'm sorry I forgot most steering wheel holders out here nowadays don't have that.

Well, what may be common sense to us veterans, or perhaps "second nature" might be a better term, represents a whole new world to a rookie, and this "commentary driving" could some valuable insight as to why seasoned drivers do some of what they do when they do it.
