So can we agree that the clutch is there for a reason, but doesn't have to be frantically stabbed twice between every shift? Imagine a rookie with a heavy load starting up a hill from a stop. Those shifts happen so fast that it would be impossible to double-clutch. That person will end up coming to a stop over and over, only able to get it out of gear but never getting it back in. Knowing how to float is part of the skill set in my opinion.

Pass me some of that 'sparkling water' and get me a sammich while you are at it.... ;)
Ok all seriousness aside....when I started it was all standard shifts but these autos spoiled me.... This is not the 1970s and tech is great....well some. No more having to screw with paper logs....no more shifting....great AC..... Ah the life of luxury and ease......changed my mind....forget the water...get me an espresso with a lemon twist ;)

I shouldn't say, I never used the clutch, as in the low gears ( and low road speed and heavy load) I'd double clutch, as the rpm's wouldn't drop as fast as the road speed, and it would be easier. Also, when splitting a gear, I'd rest my foot on the clutch slightly, to take the pressure off the driveline, that helped too. I had a boss that told me to use the clutch everytime, as the input shaft can wear a groove from not using it, but I didn't listen to him. ( besides, that freakin' Mack R model clutch took 2 feet as it was)

Ha! If you think espresso is for sissies, I dare you to order a shot. You've never had strong coffee until you've tried it. And no, not truck stop "espresso". Espresso is to coffee what whisky is to beer. Check it out.

What about mineral water? Perrier, Gerolsteiner, Pelegrino. Good stuff.

Mineral water is to water, what whiskey is to beer.

It's water with the burn of carbonation.

Tip for downshifting, if the stick wont come out of gear(floating) then you arent at the right rpm and speed. Adjust accordingly.

I know pal...I have an espresso machine...and that cost a pretty penny ;)
Wasn't making fun of it.....just showing how I prefer easy life on the road...no shifting...no paper logs etc .... and that is no joke...

I like you. For one you are a Patriot respect good sir and two you got with the times and realized how great it is to be able to drive and relax and pay attention to the road in stressfull areas aka cities.

I know I wont have an issue shifting when I head off to my schooling because Ive driven manuals but I do know I would much rather have an auto when dealing with traffic hell yes thank you and the space it saves.

Some of us go farther and have what we want built. I've got a RTO14915OD in my '05 W900L. Only Eaton transmission i ever found with a ratio set right for a Cat. Had it put together with the output-shaft from a 2000ft/lb 8LL. Been in there 4yrs with no problems

Copy that. I confused you with the sparkling water / feather boa guy. To whom I say: sparkling water is what a man drinks when regular water doesn't seem manly enough. La Croix is my vote for that particular beverage option. @Locke is right on there. Feel the burn, driver.
