Every time I jump into my car...since taking this job, I furiously smash the empty space under my left foot when I try to reverse out of my parking spot.

With a 200 to 1 ratio of miles driven, compared to my truck, I guess this is the new normal.

Been out here ALOT of years...in my own truck...never once wished it was automatic...a 379 auto would be both shameful and a sin.

I used to deal with NYC traffic on a regular basis and currently deal with traffic on a daily basis running local in a manual. No big deal. Be one with the machine.

I agree with this stacks, sometimes I run locals for my company all day long in city traffic, never once have I ever wanted a auto. Once a person learns to float and do it right it's not a problem. Even in city traffic as long as that truck is inching along I can put it right into gear without even so much as a thought.

The problem is today you have to many drivers that cant even grasp the concept of backing a truck let alone be able to shift one without destroying the tranny, hence the moves to auto's. Trust me it was not to benefit the driver it was to stop idiots from dropping trannys and costing down time and $$.

All the collision sensors, Auto's and company dash cams are all a product of the new current truck driver. Most are ones that could not make it in any other job so they slapped a license on him and said go forth and be a truck driver. Then you end up with idoits like yesterday on I-40 that rear ended a flatbed that had merged on to the freeway. He was not paying attention to the to the road and poof dead driver!

    Ok /rant off! :)

I float all my gears but clutch out my downshifts. Clutch it out, pop the throttle, and float it in. You don't always have the luxury of getting your rpms really low enabling you to float it out of gear. Works great coming down hills too. You find yourself in the wrong gear; slow down to 1250-1300 rpm, clutch it out, pop the throttle, and float it in. Never had an issue. This is with a 9 speed.
