my second stop, there is a very tight right turn. a pub sits on the corner, and cars park on both side of the street. as it is that street is tight, then add snow banks........!! i can't wait to retire, which is coming up sometime this year. 40+ years is enough of this industry, 9 years of my route is 9 years too many.
Im sorry to hear that and I also celebrate on the same coin. I hope that you continue to share your thoughts with us far into the future.
i will be here for a while when i retire, heck, i need a hobby, and building model ships in bottles, will just aggravate me......
Jesus you've been driving longer than I have been alive. Turning 36 this year. My hat off to you. Hope you have a long, fruitful retirement.
i think there is someone here, rather new i think, that has 50 years. been a LONG journey sometimes into the Abyss, sometimes into the world wide days of the stupids.. when i say 40+ years, i am approaching 46 years, in March....
Too bad I can't go out with you and watch you work. I haven't had to drive Boston yet, but did Philadelphia. Last time I was there, parallel parked cars like you described, and I jammed an intersection for a few light cycles trying to get through. The Northeast is different from anything I am used to in the Midwest and south. It sucks. Pays pretty good, but I don't like it.
north east is "old country", the rest of the country is "new world", where things are "generally" bigger and easier, as more land was readily available..we had horse and buggy deliveries, (like everyplace else) in the early 1900's...but cities are tighter here. i been out to CA many times, good god, i could not believe all the space i had...lol except the Ontario, CA, Union 76 (T/A now)...lol
I have been driving CMVs of some sort since my discharge from the AF in 1980. I had planned to drive till I was 55 then slow down a bit. Not going to bore with the details but I was forced to retire in Dec 2012. Well I thought I could either work in a safety dept and actually had a job offer. Then got the really bad news I could no longer drive anything. I did some Compliance Contracting but finally had to stop even doing that. Again not going to bore with the details but I have to be very careful. I really wanted to work until I was 70. Fate dictated otherwise. I do enjoy the times I can get out and teach a new driver how to safely do some difficult backs. These days I am sitting in a chair or on a scooter doing it. Still makes me feel relevant!
i thought about some sort of office job at a trucking company, then said, "da heck with dat idear" i want out. no responsibilities as far as trucking goes. i "might" try some sort of part time work, but doing what, i don't know. i just know it will not be: 1) at any walmart 2) at any burger place 3) at any ice cream shoppe 4) at any donut shop 5) at any school maybe i'll try and see if i can get a job as a tiger enclosure cleaner at the zoo... heck, with all my years dealing with dummies, rummies, and bosses and dispatchers, and co-workers, those darned tigers will BE AFRAID of me...!!!!
