I'm one of those types that does not do well getting up early in the morning, the so called, 6am, 7am, 8am normal day crap! Always been somewhat of a nigh owl. I just hate getting up early and do't function feel and don't sleep good. My best hours usually run from about 3pm to 3 or 4 am and prefer to to my driving during those hours. Now my question is, how easy is it to do the majority of runs during those hours. Thanks in advance for all serious replies, remember, I'm almost a newby, still in CDL school. However, I did shift work all my adult life because I do not like the normal 9 to 5....

Question: My best hours usually run from about 3pm to 3 or 4 am and prefer to to my driving during those hours. Now my question is, how easy is it to do the majority of runs during those hours.
Stories of how and when you run are also appreciated, plus tricks and tips for sleeping during the day, in the sleeper, at truck stops...

I'm in my first week out on the road, and I have to say that I much prefer night driving, but that's probably because I'm a scared out of my mind newbie. As for when you can do runs, I'm doing a dedicated route with my mentor, and we've been running about 3-5pm to 3-5am daily. We're now switching to runs that start around 9-10pm. I would think overnight runs are quite common, but I can't say for sure.

U should better explain what u r hauling as I pull a dump and walking floor and most of my delivery locations are only open 7-5 but my neighbor hauls freight from terminal to terminal which are open 24/7 so it doesn't matter

You'll get better truck stop parking running nights. I prefer nights over days, less disrespectful 4 wheelers out on the roads.

Im not a morning person either for the last 5 years i ran from KC to Edmonton Alberta with a 2 am unload appt, i was in heaven.

Now that that customer is gone Im doing US freight and to be honest almost everyone will have you scheduled for a 6 to 8 am delivery appt and its still killing me, i got used to driving til 2 to 4 am then just sleeping til i woke up, which was nice b/c all the solar powered trucks were parked and the 4 wheelers were at home so that the traffic was a lot lower at night.

If I was allowed a choice, I take the 4am-6pm shift. Very rarely in 7 years of driving have I not been able to find parking at 6 (i think jesup MD and Baytown TX were the ones I couldn't). In general tho, I move whenever the truck has hours. Don't really Care, I like money.

Can usuaalyy make better time @ night. Less traffic and construction. but your hours, as BP mentioned will be somewhat dependant on what times you are able to pickup and unload.

My husband prefers getting up at 4am cst and leaving by 5, no matter where we are.

Most of the ppl we know skateboarding do dayshift, but their was a one guy in the co that worked 12am to noon, when he could get away with it. He had been with the company long enough to get all am appts.

We still try to keep early hrs cause its easier to find a parking space, but other than fueling and showers, we tend to hit the smaller mom and pop places.
