I was talking with one of my friends last night and telling him about my new endeavor in life. So I was discussing days off and a thought came to my mind. If you get a day off for every week that your out on the road, can you go out 7 weeks and get 7 days off? Just a thought that popped up in my head.

It is possible and I say yes but again most trucking companies will not allow there truck sit for more than 4 days the most. Now if you drove for a small company or for a O/O,then it may not be an issue, but yes why not?Just keep in mind that companies don't care how long or how much money you made then, those trucks are banks on wheels for them and they may not allow you do keep the truck at home.If you do 7 weeks on and then 7 days at home, your going be slip seating your hole career.

I'm sure you could do that at some companies, I know of several.

But, more and more companies are requiring drivers to take home time at the 5 week mark. If you fail to take home time then, they freeze the days off at 5 until you take them.

Or.....some actually drop the entire 5 days off your hometime, and you have ONE day at the end of week 6.

I started with GTI and they allowed a max of 5 days off based on 31 or more days out. Your tractor would be subject to slip seating if you were off more than 3 days and were asked to completely clean out your tractor before taking the time off. In 2 1/2 years driving 31/5 off my tractor was slip seated only once to a driver with a tractor in service for an extended time. The tractor was back before I returned to work.

Most have a cap on days off. Some will even come get the truck if you take too many. They get itchy with drivers quitting.

I usually stayed out 6-7 weeks. After 4 days home, I was ready to go back out. The only time I took 7 was a vacation.

A lot of drivers off for more than 3-4 days start daydreaming of being off the road. You know, wifey hinting how nice it is to have you home nightly and you really enjoying your bed and home cooked meals ? Next thing you know, you're scanning the local want ads and looking to see if there's a local gig, right ?

I glance at them....none pay worth a ####. So it's not as heart warming as you think around here.

I could make around $1000 doing local. But who the hell wants to work 16 hour days....5 days a week.
