Driver drove without def fluid. Not sure how far he went on empty, but he brought his truck in to the shop in derate. Its in protection mode and the only other code is egr malfunction. Filled the def tank. And another mechanic tried to do a manual regen via davie after clearing the codes. Mind you the protection mode cleared as well as the egr code. it stopped the regen and went back into protection mode. Whats the first thing i should look for? The emissions systems get me everytime.

Disable the DEF derate with Davie. RT steady state with cruise and load until lights clear.

You can also attempt to run SCR evaluation test. Leave on high idle with DEF disable ran after test completed if derate remains.

No. I was not in the shop at the time he started the regen.

This ^ that said there is a non zero chance he may have fouled up the SCR as well and it may require a drop and clean or outright replacment. Not super likely but posible

Can you pee in a DEF tank? Maybe a little windshield washer added. So many things we never had to worry about. :dontknow:

The driver drove it without DEF, then tore it up, then hopefully got fired. I don't even know how that happens.

I am pretty sure a signal was sent to the FMCSA when this happened, and because he was signed on to his ELD, they have a full identification of the miscreant.
Then the EPA was also notified, and the FBI, where this individual was put on the 10 most wanted list, one of the few that has been authorized for immediate liquidation, shoot on sight. Of course the US Marshalls will also be assisting.
My advice is for him to surrender himself to the authorities immediately.
Something like Raymond Reddington in The Blacklist.
