A static load (aka: dead load) is a non-moving load. For example, a static load test on a beam would be to simply support the beam and then apply the test load over a given area. This is as opposed to a dynamic load which takes movement into account, i.e., acceleration due to gravity or some other motive force.
A static load is the most predictable and repeatable method of testing devices like headache racks due to the wide variety of loads and conditions present in the trucking industry.
Any questions regarding the specifics of any testing would be addressed by the manufacturers, regulators and/or any applicable standards published by organisations such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Such information would also address other important factors such as penetration resistance which would take into account the concentration of a load over a given area, etc.
Generally, when manufacturers publish test data it will be based on the use of supplied or recommended mounting hardware. -

I couldnt see any chains on the load but I did see broken straps. My next question would be did he use edge protectors? Theres really no way to tell.
I can tell you I've hauled loads like this multiple times and they are squirrily. Every one I hauled I wasn't aloud to use chains. I saw quite a few guys just throw straps with no edge protectors and take off.
The last question would be if he did use edge protectors, what kind? In my experience the cardboard ones will snap in half on these loads. The cheap plastic ones they sell in the truck stops will also snap on square edged metal.
Bottom line could this wreck have happened and the load stayed secured? I would have to say probrably. But I did notice it said he went thru a gas station island and took out a support beam. I would guess that the straps probrably got cut when that happend.
In any case its very tragic and all of us drivers need to slow down. Most accidents happen because we sre hurrying. And I'm guilty of it too. We need to slow down do our pre trip and our load checks. As well as keep an eye on our surroundings such as traffic and weather. -
Maybe i'm wrong but I thought I read a news report last week that said the driver had a heart attack , which is the reason the accident happened, ether way a driver is dead and someone wanted to blame his driving for,.we get enough of the from the lawmakers, we certinly don't need more blame then we already get, it was a terrible accident that was un avoidable in my opinion,.may is name live on in hearts.
