A lot of really good points made here. I'm currently a DM and we are essentially salaried dispatchers. Its not a fun job by any stretch. We are responsible for everything from making sure loads and info are given to drivers. Making sure they are onetime, managing drivers hours, watching idle times overspeed, fuel stops etc... the controllable expenses for tje company and were on the front line with drivers for maintaining customer service. You know stuff corporate looks at.
Basically though were baby sitters. If I driver is only getting 2000 miles a week we get yelled at for "screwing them over" but give them 2500 and "we don't care about drivers were pushing to hard" . I get cussed out by drivers because lumpers are to slow. I get cussed out by planners and CSRs because a driver accepted a preplan but couldn't ontime the load because he miscalculated his hrs (did I mention I'm supposed to know all 40 iof my drivers log books better than they do) and I get the blame when a driver quits because we got him home a day late for home time even though I fought tooth and nail with planners to get him home but was told the load needed to move out and one extra day wouldn't hurt.
Oh and of course its my fault if a truck doesn't get out of the shop on time or the trips ladies short you a few miles.

I've driven truck, worked as a mechanic and now have 2 years DM experiance and I can tell you the driver manager is the lowest paid position in trucking yet held most accountable position by drivers, fleet managers, planners and corporate.

Having worked in many facets of the trucking industry its a tough thankless job for all. I respect what our drivers do and I respect what the folks in operations do. There is really no easy job in this industry.
