Its sad that you're giving such bad advice White Dog.

Anybody that has any sense does not start out in one of the bottom rung companies. Start out with a good company that pays you a fair wage.

CPM on open deck work is not a fair wage. That's what the newbies/wannabees should know.

LOL! You got nearly 4,500 posts MJ657......apparently, you have been around these forums for quite some time. You know as well as I do, which companies are willing to hire and orientate/train new drivers. It is the "bottom rung" companies. Don't you get that?!?

I think giving newbies/wannabies false hope on what to expect STARTING OUT is "bad advice". My OBSERVATION (not advice) is more realistic.

Now; my ADVICE, is to go with the best pay & benefit package the industry offers for newbies...which, unfortunately for them, is more often than not, the 'so-called' bottom rung companies.

We don't necessarily disagree with each other---just seems we are on two different pages.

I get what you're saying White Dog. The problem I have is the multitude of experienced guys on this site telling everyone new you have to start out with the standard junk companies.

With a little ambition and willingness to get out from behind a keyboard there are other opportunities.

Absolutely true! The "bottom rung" is definitely the easy way in...and as such, will offer the least in rewards to start.

If newbies/wannabies hit the streets with vim & vigor there ARE much better opportunities for them. But they gotta work for it, work at it, work on it, and be persistent yet patient. I too recommend everyone to go that route.
Unfortunately few will...because by the time they even decide to go to school, they have already decided they wanna drive NOW...and "now" means taking the easy way once they graduate...which is bottom rung. Neither one of us will be able to change the minds of the impatient....so might as well tell them what to expect if they take the easy way in.

Let's not take this thread in that direction.

I couldn't disagree more. My pay package would be as follows:

48 CPM for all practical miles
    $30 first drop/pick
    $50 each subsequent drop/pick
10% of gross if LTL is picked up with a full load (I do this all the time)
    $75 tarp pay
    $25 smoke tarp pay

I'd love to pay more for tarps, but that's all the company pays that I'm leased to. It's extremely rare we have a full tarp load, to be honest guys make a killing off our tarp pay. Half the loads are one tarp and done. There are also some customers that pay detention, I'd pass that along 100%. The company I'm leased to does offer revenue contracts - in fact I'm on one - but the math wouldn't work out if I hired a guy.

I think that's a fair pay package, do you disagree?

Your made up pay package would probably be great for a lot of guys.

Personally I would not want to take the pay cut.....

Pay is an important factor when going to any company, but lots of drivers hire on and then learn what all the other variables are. it does no good to make a bunch of money if your not getting any home time. Or, if an outfit pays great, but you are in the shop once a week. Everyone knows if a company pays miles, you can expect to sit and wait when things are scarce, like in Denver. Then again if your percentage and in Denver, well your gonna deadhead a ways.

I like % myself, and at the end of the week if I'm home and cleared a Dime for the week, I'm usually happy. And, knock on wood, I've only seen the inside of the shop twice in the past year.
