I think you are right though, work ethic would seriously be a major issue. -
I think I would be worked more for Less on salary but new drivers would probably be better off instead of driving for .32 cents

Hard work and showing up pays? I had no idea!.. at my company, if you stop in the office and BS with the Dispatcher, you succeed.
Been here a year, and a half, never turned down a load, never complained about one. Called off once when I had pnemonia, and I get shat on everyday lol.
It's just like when I was in the Union Iron Workers. Everyone gets the same pay, even the lazy guys. BUT, when work slowed down, or winter came, who do you think was working? The guys who showed up everyday and put in a days work. The lazy people get weeded out one way or another, in every job. -
Agreed, work ethic is the issue these days. Say a driver's always on time, and runs 3000 miles per week average. Put him on salary, and in short order he'll find reasons that he can only run 2200 miles per week. Suddenly he's sitting, waiting for road service to come replace that headlight bulb instead of doing it himself like he did when he was paid by the mile. You get the idea.

What would be your incentive, as a driver, to want to work, if you know you're going to get the same pay, whether it be 3000 miles, or 3 miles? A lot of guys would drag their feet, show up at a receiver, and let others in front of them, play games at the truckstop, etc. They really would have no reason to do anything above and beyond the minimum.
And if management questions them, well, I got hung up at the WalMart DC, when in fact I was done 3 hrs ago, and decided a nap was appropriate.
One place I worked tried something similar. They paid their drivers a minimum salary, and then they could earn more above that minimum. One guy did great, but the other two did the minimum, and they were happy. The work was backing up. I think they returned to their old way of paying, mileage and stops. -
I wish companies did pay salary.But many of these companies give very low miles or 2000 to 2500 a week.They'd be losing money I would think.

Cost is still there. You are paying for the truck whether it sits or it's parked. You still have your overhead. -
Not as much as you think.
Employment costs would add even more. -
Then get on the dispatcher to manage truck time better. Don't put it on the driver.
They are their to keep the driver moving with a load.
Like I said, I would expect some weeks for a driver to actually drive less miles than 3000. The driver can also expect to see some weeks where they drive more than 3000 miles.
Averaged over the course of the year, it makes it even for the times you have good freight compared to bad freight.
Labor is half the fixed overhead cost from near as I remember and can figure.
