We haul into some of the most secure sites in the nation, military bases, nuke plants, refineries etc.
We are not allowed or required to surrender our drivers licenses.
Not to be copied or scanned.
They are allowed to manually input name, number, state and such into their system
but the physical card does not leave the drivers possession.
It has caused some dustup at more than one facility but we are authorized to abort delivery if they will not accept our company ID.
That card is my livelihood and would be used to identify you should a tragedy or accident occur inside a site.
Driver rant.... shippers/receivers and driver identification

Bulk terminals started copying CDLs after 9-11 until the one guy, an ex-paralegal refused...he walked away from that life and loved driving and still had 'contacts' in the law firm who did him a favor and wrote a letter...copies stopped.
Sending shipments into Nuke power plants was always tough...send the SSN to security at XXXXXXXXX 'pre' clear your driver and it STILL took 4 hours to get into the plant.
Had one operator who kept his Pete immaculate went through the whole nine, mirrors on wheels under the truck, etc. until they told him the unkempt, smelly guy in the dirty guard's uniform would need to ride into the plant with him and he refused. the compromised as he followed the walking guard in to make his delivery.
One apparel company wants a copy as part of CT PAT and the feds didn't care when we complained, EVEN WHEN TOLD it occurs after the fact and without the individual's knowledge....
You may never know... -
All those are legitimate reasons to VIEW a license in order to VERIFY someone's identity, what reason is there to copy and retain an actual copy of a license? Do companies also not trust the employees doing the verification?
-
That is a good point you mention, there are places that expect you to leave your license at the guard shack. I had drivers in the past leave without being given back their license, neither they nor the guard(s) remembered to do so. Then an hour or three down the road driver calls in all in a panic because they suddenly realized their license is hours behind them and the company is closed until morning. Funny how those same places will not forget to get their visitor badge back though, or you don't leave.Dennixx and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.

Verify? Sure, but copy in some of those cases may be a bit of a stretch.roshea Thanks this.

There is little difference between writing the info down vs coping the ID. I, just as anybody else, resent the latter.
By legitimate, I mean the governmental institutions and law enforcement, financial institutions or high security facilities. Whether they copy your CDL or not, does not matter as their data bank will have your info anyways.
Obviously, I don't mean Kroger or Capstone Logistics. -
"But but but it's a privut bizniss and they can do what they want!!"
Really?
"You can't come in here because you're Black."
"You can't come in here because you're a woman."
"You can't come in here because you're obviously homosexual."
"You can't come in here unless you 'do me a favor(IYKWIM)'."
"You can't come in here unless you let us access all your most personal information."
Need I say more?kemosabi49 and roshea Thank this. -
Its state code in all 50 that any state issued DL cant be duplicated in any form. So there are several places that want to do that. And drivers let them willingly.
-
Instead of repeating "old wives tales" why not actually provide prof as in the a single states law that prevents it? Just saying it's against the law doesn't make it true. After all, I could clam to be Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile...
Also why, if its illegal., did my search find 100's of articles advising to not let others copy your ID, but I found zero articles about it being illegal? If it was actually illegal all those advice articles would have pointed to a law and not simply "It's a bad idea" advice.roshea Thanks this. -
I think he is talking about this but not the same as taking a copy of ID.
Two Licenses Could Get You a Ticket
For example, California Vehicle Code §12511 states, “no person shall have in his or her possession or otherwise under his or her control more than one driver's license.” If a police officer finds you have more than one non-expired driver's license at a time, you can be ticketed.Feb 18, 2020
