I'm glad to see a student with a good job prospect . There are people like you out there that show potential and will succeed . But opportunities like that are scarce .

You are heading in the right direction I have my degree as well and teaching children isn't that bad the salary is ok and the benefits are sweet, along with the time off , I actually look at trucking as a second thing, when school is out in the summer I will run those logs to mill like a bat outta !##$% then when school is back open I will teach again......You have to put yourself where you see youself!

Yep. And guess what - BEFORE the white man came to this country, the indian nations were cutting each other's throats.

I know that when I was OTR I would not have dared to break down my wages to an hourly basis. I would have hit a deep mental depression and stayed there!

I think that pretty much this life is either one that you love, or one that you hate. If you love it, you will put up with conditions that are terrible, and constantly deteriorating from there. . .

If you hate it, then nothing, wages, hours, or anything else is going to keep you in it for very long. That is if you are "normal.":biggrin_25526:

Actually, it may not be a bad idea for a newbie to work for these companies for a while. Get a year under your belt with one of the "training companies." That way, you just might recognize, and value a good job when you get one!

After all, if a person goes right from school to the "top of the line," will they really appreciate what they have?
Yeah, I'll give that a big "AMEN!"

That's OK, don't worry about them. There are always gonna be the new hires. Companies know this, so they really don't care if their "more experienced" (read that "more expensive") help goes on down the road. . .

It sounds like you have a pretty good gig lined up for yourself. That is what is important.:yes2557:

You have a great idea.Stick to it friend..I have a buddy who is a fireman and he works as a C.D.L. driver in the summer time for 2 months when he takes his leave from the fire dept.Been firefighter for 30 years and has C.D.L. FOR MANY YEARS.

He told me the way it is TODAY,he could never make it with a wife,3 kids and a home and cars in the trucking business full-time.

He was smart. He found another ''great career' and used trucking as a second income for his family..

You are on to something to only expect this as a secondary income.Because thats all it really is anyway...lmfao..

We have people in this forum admitting working ''full time'' and there net pay is $300.00 and less...for being gone for 14 days and 2 off.

That is total DESPERATION....AND SLAVE WAGES....

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm and EMT and we make $8 per hour to respond to 911 calls. I love trucking wages and the freedom is great. But I've been doing construction since I was 15 and you can't beat those wages. Course I co own a company, but still, great pay.

OK, I'm guessing that you are doing this on a "volunteer" basis? (Or "reserve" or whatever they call it.) Rather than doing this as a regular job?

I was never paid for any of the thousands (literally) of hours that I put in as a medic or firefighter. (Unless I happened to be on duty in my law enforcement job, and had to "change hats" at the scene. I started volunteering as an "advanced first aid" ambulance attendant back in the mid sixties, in a suburb of Denver. I volunteered off and on for community ambulance services and fire departments into the mid nineties, where ever I was living for my regular job.

So for me, eight bucks an hour would have been great. Didn't do it for the money, anyhow, (obviously)
Only problem with construction is the ups and downs. Sure, you are making good money when you are working. But being subject to building slumps, weather etc. is it really that good?

You can't base a salary on what it should be. Salaries are determined by supply and demand. That truck driver might be doing a tougher job than the pro athlete, but there are fewer people able to be a pro athlete, so they make more money. Many professions end up earning less than they should based on their value to society, but as long as there are plenty of people willing and wanting to do them, wages will stay low.

Someone with years of trucking will not get the ''top'' pay he/she really deserves....Just the way it turned out in the end...

The C.D.L. is not worth much these days...The paper it is writen on is worth more, sad to say..

The problem is many people driving now don't even want to be truckers but there's no where else for them to find a job or they have to work out the indentured servitude their "free" training obligated them to .
