Laborers, techs, apprentices. You have to be above 21 to get a CDL for now and obtain a CDL which requires actual driving skills test. BUT that is not where the skill is. The skill as with all your half arsed examples on goal post moving comes with the doing and becoming proficient at it. But there again I figure once you get into the actual industry you will get absorbed into the 70% of the drop outs and blame everything under the sun. Good luck with your ignorance. I hope life doesn't kick you in the teeth too bad. Don't presume to know anything about folks. It just re enforces your total laziness in intellect. BUT, just to help you out. I had been a mechanic for 20+ years helping self absorbed folks such as yourself stay on the road before getting into driving trucks. Before that I did framing, roofing, and warehousing. That kind of honest and heartfelt response, no matter how true and accurate it is, might get you suspended or banned.

The mods can be unforgiving of stating the truth to someone, if it might hurt that someones feelings.

I've hired, fired, managed etc. Mega's must all get kickback for training programs from the government because no way would any company in any industry treat incoming employees with the horrible business practices they do otherwise. Much of what new drivers go thru could be improved or completely eliminated IMO if the huge carriers (OTR) actually wanted to keep drivers. and the pay is not so great considering the absolute lack of home life. they act as if the mandated 34hr reset HAS to be the extent of a break. well if drivers are only disposable cogs in your machine then go ahead and prioritize having that rig rolling every possible second...at the expense of a long term driver. any other manager in any other industry knows that's self defeating.
It's a hard life. I didn't mind it most of the time, really liked it some of the time. but if I needed a social life or had kids, no deal, I couldn't have done it. the infrastructure, the trucker resources (parking, showers, actual food and/or groceries) are sporadic and there's room for a lot of improvement. I heard most CDL holders leave the industry in the first year, and I think that sounds plausible. Even local jobs tend toward 10, 12, 14 hr days. fine if I was 20 or 30, maybe even 40 but at my age I run out of steam after 10 hours. Plus I need to buy my own groceries and clean my house, I don't have a wife to take care of me so if they want single people to stay working for them maybe 8-10hr shifts should be looked at.
anyway- good job for the time I was there, but glad to go back to my old career.

The schools ARE subsidized by the government. My instructor told me they get $5000 (or close) for every student. The Megas also double-dip by charging the student for the "free" school if they don't work for them.

I left this industry because I can sit on arrsseee and make more in two hours watching sports than I would during a full days driving.
Plus driving an automated took the fun out of it for me. I actually enjoyed shifting and thought it was the fun part.

Otr was a fun vacation though. Only wished I had stopped and done more cool experience type stuff rather than run an extra load that week.

Schneider was my first job after cdl school, and out of 20 drivers in my orientation- only 1 remained beyond 3 months according to my DM. That was me.

Same thing happened at my current company. We had 20+ in my orientation and nearly everyone was gone within.
2 weeks. Me and only 1 other still remain. I know this because we had created a groupme and stayed in touch during orientation and after getting our trucks and stuff. 90% of the orientation class was bashing anything & everything within a week of getting in their truck. The main complaint was "My Recruiter Lied REEEE!"
They all started scheming where they'd go next (many went to CFI).

No, sorry. Not a skill as far as labors assessment. There’s no real barrier to entry, no time put into it, and everyone more or less has the basic skill already (regular license). It’s not meant as a knock but just as an explanation to why you’re replaceable. My test is this, if a high school kid (18 year old) can be your coworker, and do the same work as you, it’s not a skilled job.

There is no driver shortage.
Trucking companies not getting everything they want ? Yes. All people want more of something. If a trucking job looks like the best available option people will take that. When there are better options available for people they will choose the better option. Today most businesses say they can’t find enough help. Why go to work anymore ? Blue is now in power and sleepy is dishing out checks from the government , live in a truck and put up with weather !!! No way.
