That's the OUCH of it all. I certainly DID read the whole thread, and followed this story religiously. My peeps in Ft. Myers STILL do not have power.

Nothing socialist about anything I posted. Bottom line, any criminal prosecution has to be tried in the jurisdiction where the alleged crime occurred, and the defendant has the right to a trial by jury. Who is going to make up that jury? People sympathetic to the needs of the people who received that plywood...their friends...their neighbors...and possibly even those people themselves. In other words, the jury would exercise their right to nullify whatever laws were broken in this case because of the circumstances at hand when the alleged crime occurred. The district attorney knows this, and also realizes he goes to that same group of people who will make up that jury every time his term is up and he seeks re-election in order to retain his job. Why would ANY prosecutor take up a losing case where the PR he receives from prosecuting that case will put him out of a job? He won't, and the police know it, too...which is why they wouldn't arrest the driver even if you demanded such action as the owner of the truck or the freight. The people hold the power, both on the jury AND at the ballot box. Neither of which is the case in Cuba or North Korea. In those countries, the desires of the people don't matter...only what the dictator ruling from afar has determined to be right or wrong. In other words, your hard line stance is more apt to be carried out in a socialist country where the people have no say than it is here where the people have the right to overrule those in authority when those in authority are wrong. Our government derives its just powers by the consent of the governed, and when the government goes too far (as in prosecuting this driver), then it is the duty of the people to step in and say "not on our watch" through jury nullification and the election process.

Everyone that stole plywood that night will shop at Lowe's or Menards the next day if they can save a nickle.

And you must not know how the LAW works....

    Chapter 501 Section 160 - 2017 Florida Statutes

Apparently, Florida had enough of your type taking advantage of the people in their times of need and outlawed the practice. That is how democracy works.

Because this issue touches on each person's deeply held values. Values like law, order, honesty, integrity, empathy, and generosity. I agree. This is a unique thread.
