Driver Trainers

Most experienced (2+ years) drivers know better and refuse to train. There are so many driver trainees coming into the system the carriers are forced to use these relatively inexperienced drivers as trainers to fill the gap, and the accident and state scale inspection stats show this (in my opinion). I think this is one of the primary reasons you see so many of those small yellow triangles on most all the starter companies CSA 2010 scores. I honestly don't know how to fix this.

 

Poor economy means companies won't pay a real driver trainer what they're worth. That's a large part of why experienced drivers won't train anymore. Also, when they have a good driver trainer, they tend to burn them out quickly with the constant training. Anyone who has ever really trained before knows that you don't do it for the extra money, and if the company burns you out training, you simply stop. So yes, if you are new to the industry and are going to ride with a trainer, you should fully expect them to be wet behind the ears, and take what you hear with a grain of salt. Use your head.........common sense will go a long way here.

 

My company will let you train after 6 months provided no incidents and taking a few train the trainer classes. I disagree with this. I must say i got lucky and got a 11 year million mile + trainer. That is why i will NOT train until maybe my first million if ever. This job has so much to it one with that little exp has no place training. Just my thoughts.

 

Got told today that its changed to 1 year accident free at swift to be a driver trainer

 

started training after 20 years exp. .51 cpm for all miles seems fair . Have talked to trainers for diff carriers , one was at .32 . That for training pay is not ! Think we have a good program. And think 5 years should be a bear min .

 

I agree with the experience needed to train. I am going through Swift Orientation on Jan. 3. I will probably get one of those 6 month wonder trainers....

 

I trained for a short while at a Flatbed outfit. Tarps,tie-down,paper work,ect. most people can figure that out. Teaching some cretin to drive that things he knows it all and does not listen to directions,failure.
