Since you are mentioning shorter runs, I always get a kick out of drivers who will refuse shorter runs where they can be turning their wheels and making some money. Instead, they will sit on their duffs and make NO MONEY waiting for the "good runs."

I always drive home empty with the milk tanker.....once I unload at the plant, the only place I can get more milk is from the dairy farms.

So in exact numbers, I am empty 50% of the time. I get paid by the load. -

This^^^^^^^drove for a fast food distributor til I retired....leave the yard loaded....put off 2 to 3 stops and return empty to the yard. Some drivers had back-hauls on their routes , but that was the exception , not the norm.

Local, payed by the hour so i dont care if im empty or not, payed the same. The rare times im on stops and miles pay its payed the same loaded or empty and ever stop except the yard is $15.

I deadhead about 200 miles with one of my current customers but am now paid the same loaded or empty per mile. My company is trying to branch in different directions. Some pay percentage of load, others pay per mile.
