Looking for the most bang for the buck on a radio for simple effective use.
For the working driver. Not hobbyist.

So specs are basically reach a good few miles and hear what's around, or up ahead.
Kind of a stupid proof working set up.
No skip or side bands are needed.
I was thinking of a cobra 19 or similar size unit.
New is not a necessity for is digital.

No matter what you decide on I'd get a new unit so you know 100% there has been no monkey business done under the hood. Lots of affordable options out there

Uniden pro510 is pretty decent, for a cheap radio, range is really going to depend on your antenna setup.

Edit: pro520 is pretty good too and only a few more bucks. Any radio you get that isn't a "big" radio should be putting out about the same power from factory. Antenna systems are the difference between 1 mile range and 10 mile range.

I will add I would like near 50 watts just for good measure. Or what ever is needed for power to reach a few miles ahead in all weather conditions.

Antenna setup gives me a headache.
I have done copper coax before and than did about 2 coils at base of mounts on twin set up, swr was almost 1 and I could reach 25 miles most days with 50 watt Connex 11 meter 3400hp.
But that is more radio than I need any day soon.

4 watts is needed for a few miles, 50 should get you 30.

The Italy RM 203P amp is what I use to get into the 50 watt range. About 75 bucks. Works well.

I would stay away from the cobra 19 radios. I got a cobra 19 model III a few years ago for Christmas. The transmit sounds really good at 100%, but the receive and the squelch circuitry in the radio is horrible. From what I’ve heard, the model IV Isn’t any better.

I’ve heard good reports about the Uniden 510 and 520 radios that was mentioned earlier. Plus a little amp to feed your power needs, and a good antenna system, you should be good to go.

Also, I suppose I should mention if you really want the biggest bang for your buck, you should get the West Mountain DSP speaker for a meer $200. I think it’s been mentioned once about it on this thread (LOL) and then your radio setup will be golden.

If they could ever price that west mountain dsp speaker under $100 I might have a look. It may well be worth $200+ but that price is over budget for me.

I agree, there are some very nice radios around $200. I have a hard time spending that much on a speaker. I understand how good DSP is, but it’s still just a speaker to me. Although it would be fun to put one in this Pete, just to see what the results are.
