5 years with T-Mobile that has happened twice and there is an easy fix to it. You just switch your network connections to whatever 4G only is called and your back.

Rand McNally makes a commercial GPS tablet (TND model 80). It is Android based and a bit on the expensive side for what you get, and you are locked into the Rand Mc system IMHO.

I think you could set up your own Android or Windows based system using the Rand Mc tablet as a model. One problem I ran into when thinking about doing it myself, most good GPS systems are Android based but my HOS logs are Windows based. Buying a license to download and use trucker GPS software can also be expensive.

I ended up downloading a bootleg copy of a trucker GPS system, run it off my Android phone mounted on the dash and keep a small Windows based laptop to do everything else.

I'm now thinking about the Microsoft surface line of tablets. They come with Windows 10 & you can download any program that you can use with Windows 10 which is really nifty. Plus they come stock with Microsoft office suit and they are some of the top rated tablets for use with programs like photoshop & for illustration/drawing with a tablet stylus, which i think would be nice on the road.

That sound very nice. Do you know what GPS program you will use?

It has been more than a year since I thought about putting together my own, specialty trucker laptop or tablet, I did buy a mount for it but never used it, sitting in the back of my hall closet now. Plan on mounting it not on the floor but much closer to the eye line of a typical GPS unit.

Good luck, let us know your results, I think your own unit is the best choice, more.... much more you can do with it than an off the shelf GPS. I will likely put together my own unit after I come back from my next vacation.
