You are mistaken. The person I speak of is a close relative with many miles under their belt.

This person DOES have a HAZMAT endorsement, but has partial, limited vision, in one eye. You will not be able to get grandfathered in anymore, that is true.

Yes, this person DOES have a waiver and well that they should too.

after reading the responses as you can see, you will not be able to drive....

however, you CAN still go to school, like a community college as an example, get even just an associates degree, in the meantime in conjunction with that education, you can probably go online and take up "brokering" training, then when you complete BOTH educational course, you can either work as a dispatcher, load coordinator, even a broker (licensed) and still be "involved" in trucking. so you DO HAVE avenues to pursue in trucking, you just got to keep an open mind about it..

you might actually do better with more education IN trucking....!~~~~

There was a Captain on my fire deparment who only had vision in one eye. Something had happened to his right eye when he was a very young man and he had severe scarring of his cornea. He had no trouble driving the engines and tenders into some very challenging areas. And he was an excellent firefighter. While some of the rookies were hesitant to go on a line with him, I always volunteered to back him up.

There are things you can do that do not include interstate driving. Check your state regulations for exemptions. As said above, depending on the state, you may be able to drive intra. Of course, that probably doesn't mean much if you live in Rhode Island.

Whatever the condition is, I hope they are able to correct it. I just wish it didn't entail the loss of an eye.

    Good luck to you.

So, went to the Cleveland Clinic yesterday. It turns out it was a tumor in my retina. But it was a benign type. They killed it with a laser and over the next 6 weeks my retina will reattach itself. then we will know how much permanent damage was done. Thank you for all your thoughts, well wishes, and other options! They mean a lot to me. God bless

Hi Ranger, my dad has been a trucker for over 40 years now. he's currently in Florida & having issues with passing the vision exams. We have heard about getting a waiver if he stays intrastate only. Is this the type of exemption your relative received? Was it in Calif or another state?
not sure how to go about getting one but would sure appreciate any input you have on it.
