I seasonally drive for grape harvest and the odd job n northern CA so I have no OTR experience. My trips never required logbooks. I have been asked to drive a 97 OR registered vehicle to OR to pick up a lowboy loaded with another semi tractor loaded on it. As I understand it, as I drive fewer than eight days out of 30 and the truck is older than a 2000, I do not need an ELD but I do need to maintain a written log. As the vehicle is registered in OR, I shouldn't have to worry about permits, correct? Will I have any issues returning to CA? I will have the owner of both trucks with me but he doesn't possess a CDL. I believe I must carry chains even if not needed? For a three axle trailer is 4 sufficient? I believe I need chains, when required, on one outside trailer tire for each axle, is this correct? What kind of paper work do I need for what I am hauling? Any other things I should consider would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know if you are required to have chains but you better have them when they are mandated. For state requirements:
2017-2018 Chain Laws -
Yeah I'm a little out of touch with current chain laws, I believe 2nd axle all four tires, 3rd axle two tires, trailer axles two tires, Must carry chains even if not snowing. paper log, proper registration for truck/trailer. papers for truck loaded on lowboy too. Permit for OS in both Or./Ca. if necessary

The truck loaded on lowboy shouldn't really need anything other then a BOL. It's just another load.

If you're hauling a motor vehicle you need papers to show you didn't steal it. It doesn't need to have current registration though.

BOL was all i ever got from ritchie bros auctions. Hauled bus's, pickups, and graders.
There COULD be more paperwork that should have went with but all the auctions i picked up at. Really had no idea on just about anything leaving their yards. And the titles. All got mailed.
