Regarding per diems offered by companies, there is a fabulous post on this forum somewhere -- I read it a few days ago. It's written by a former accountant. I can't remember what thread it is in. Do a search for for per diem info.

The jist of the post is that the company benefits greatly from you choosing the per diem benefit and it DOES negatively affect your future social security earnings. It is great info and well worth the search.

His final advice was to STAY AWAY FROM PER DIEM's!!!

That will make some folks happy and probably others very sad. I have driven 9,10, 13 and the auto. I must say, I do prefer the auto. After over 40+ years of ice hockey at the college and minor league levels, my left knee isn't quite what it used to be.

Hi Overdrivexx..My husband and I have teamed for 15 years OTR cross country..in reference to the perdiem..we find it is best to take this credit at the end of each fiscal year..it puts you in a lower tax bracket. We tried getting perdiem thru the year and it did make our paychecks larger but is to confusing as to how many days you ran in a year and alot easier for your tax preparer.PERDIEM is $52 a day( or what state you live in) and each full day you log on your log book( its a legal document)...the got allows you to take this daily allowance credit /for per say meals or towards motel expenses....ie $52.00 x 100 Days running = $5200.00 yr allowance

Per diem works out best for me because I owe the IRS money.

Per diem rate is now $59 per day. You can deduct 80% of the total.

Does U.S. Express have regional fleets to choose from.....or do you run all 48 states if you choose OTR?
