I've had A LOT of yrs to test this theory. Trust me its BS.
I get up to speed quick and try to keep the guy behind me from hitting me.
My wife drives gently and gets 2 MPG better than me out of the same car, driving the same route, burning the same gas.

Good to know, thanks!

in my experience, the more patient you have driving your truck the more money you safe in fuel!!

When you have ca 7hp to 2000lbs things get different...
But then again I dont rev the snot out of it but shift at # 1500rpm.
Hmmm guess I have to check this with the family car...If I remember right wife also here gets better Mpg´s on small cars. -
what we learned in school was progressive shifting. This means using only the power necessary to move the load staying within the 11-1500 shift range. I guess that depends on the transmission. There was one at school that was really tight and required only a 300 bump or drop to change gears without the use of the clutch. The instructors apearantly were not very interested in fuel economy because most wanted to go, go, go all the time. I drove what was comfortable to me usually slower than posted speeds because I was new to it and did not the area. I don't really know what the fuel economy was like in the trucks but that is the way it was explained in school. We also had a discussion about lowering the speed limits like the late 1970's to save on fuel usage. Wouldn't be surprised to see that happen in the very near future the way things are going with fuel prices. Thats gonna make trying to earn a buck driving truck nearly impossible (IMHO). Thanks for lettin me share what I was taught--lockednloaded

lockednloaded...now you ´d be that kinda driver I´f you practice what you speak I´d hire instantly...
Operators take note..these kind of guys are worth to pay extra...because of the right attitude.
They also are most likely to keep them rigs in impeccable condition. -

Flawed theory... slow does it... smooth acceleration.. rpms under 1500 (where the torque is)...
MPG depends on a couple of things... weight... speed... aerodynamic factor (Cx)... throttle
The less throttle, the less diesel into the engine... It does not matter how fast you get there because at the end of the day mpg will become an average... If during acceleration your mpg is at less than 1... that will average with the top speed mpg... -
