Apply at Prime. Put down everything on the app that's within the time frame requested, and let the recruiter know about the other stuff when you talk to them.

If you can get into Prime's training program, you'll have no problem getting in just about anywhere... their pay is about the best among training companies and their trucks have APUs/inverters, so they are pretty picky about who they accept.

If you do get accepted, consider going with them. You don't have to pay up front for their schooling, and if you stay with them for a year, you don't have to pay for it at all.

Yes, they run 62 MPH trucks. The only problem with that are the "super truckers" who want to run 70 in the 55 zones. Just sit back and smile when they pass, knowing that you are making more $ per mile than they are...

I really don't think anyone here is bashing this driver. They are only stating some facts. Some companies do not hire anyone with a DUI no matter how long ago. Guess what companies they are? Yep, the ones that pay the best. Also with tickets they can and do the same. Face it, with your record you can not expect getting a job just like everyone else. Look at the facts here, Driver A holds up one application. He or she just got out of school and has no spots or dings on their record. Then Driver B (which is your case) holds up the application. Both are going for the same job. Who do you think they are going to hire?

My point is you may get a job if you do it right or you'll never get hire if you file just like the rest. You have to sell yourself and show them how it will be beneficial if they hire you. That means you'll need to get out there and do some face to face. Show them you're not the same and now you're responsible and ready to do anything to drive. Don't put too much hope in pre-hire letters. Anyone can get those and the company does it's looking when they are about to invest money. My suggestion to you is find all the companies you can reach that are within driving distance and go see them. Make that company believe they will make money from you. Take whatever company you can to gain the experience you'll need. Most likely you'll end up at a lousy job but most of us have. Then when you get some clean miles and even better work history then you can go after the better companies. Sit down and make a list of companies in your area and the type of work you want. Then get all your records together and out the door you go. Don't let anyone steer you away. Even the companies that say they want 3 or so years experience. I've seen good companies hire the guy right off the street because they needed a driver. Also remember good paying companies have no need to advertise for help. Those are the companies that drivers go to. Right now you're in a position that you need a company. Stay clean and you'll reverse that to where the companies will need you. Good luck and don't give up. This is a tough industry but know the more you put into it the more you'll get out.

Yeah I def hear you on the driver A & B thing. I'm not expecting to just find a dream gig right out of school. I understand that I have to prove my way, and that's fine. I have a lot going for me, and a few old mistakes I wont allow to stop me from achieving what I want. I've proven many people wrong before in my life about many things.

Back when I wanted to get into I.T. work, everyone told me there was no way I was going to find a job without a degree. Well, here I am 11 years later and head of my department. Granted its for a smaller company but I am a dept head. Pay is pretty good but I just cant stand sitting behind a desk anymore.

My work history is probably better than most. I am not a job hopper. Being with the same company for 11 years shows stability. yes I have a couple tickets....but I am willing to bet stable work history will play in my favor for a lot of good companies.

If I HAVE to start at a company like Swift, so be it. Experience is experience, and just because there are lots of people that have negative experiences at companies like swift or werner...doesn't mean my experience will be the same. There are plenty of guys (and gals) that did just fine at swift and werner and just moved on to better companies for more money. I am a positive guy, and its gotten me over a lot of hurdles in life.

As far as everything that is on my record...sure things are there, but NONE of them have point value, which is what the insurance companies go by. If I have to wait 3 years for that recent ticket to drop past the time frame....fine, no worries. I am not desperate to get into trucking right away......it's just want I want to do for a final career in life. I'm not young, but I'm not old either. I know for a fact I would be an asset to any company I work for, and regardless what anyone says...I can't wait to prove them wrong once again .:biggrin_255:

Are far as my old DUI...yeah its a hit. It's 14 years old though, and I THINK I may be able to get it off my record completely somehow, but I am not sure. I know plenty of companies will hire me even though it there, being as it's so old. I know there are companies that won't hire someone with a DUI at all, and that's fine too. I am not in a competition to get on with the worlds best trucking company and become the worlds best trucker.

I am in the beginning stages of contacting companies, so I will keep this thread updated from time to time. Thanks for all your input, and be safe out there!

Swift isn't nearly as bad as many people say they are. At one time they were a scum sucking bottom feeder (lke CR England is now), but they are pulling themselves up much like JB Hunt and Prime have done.

I've only had two major complaints with Swift. The first was the terrible pay for the first year, but that's been recently addressed. The other was the lack of APUs in the company trucks. Aside from the occasional slow week here and there, which everyone has, I've never been hurting for miles.

Just based on your original post you would have no issues at all getting hired by Prime. They actually only go back 3 years on dui. 4 years if you're a prospective student without a CDL yet. That's about as lenient a hiring standard as you'll find in this industry I think.

I wasn't talking about getting a dream job. I was talking about getting in the door, any door. As long as schools are pumping out drivers with clean records you'll always have a hit unless you have it removed somehow. Just giving you some advice I've seen but if you have a better idea go for it.

Entry-level drivers are hired everyday with worse records than yours. The DUI will rear its head if you attempt to enter Canada, in my opinion, the 15 over is 8 years old and shouldn't be an issue. While HO Wolding is a good company, they likely want you to be in school prior to completing the application because they want to see your long form physical (the school will send it to them, your app has a release on it). This will indicate surgeries, medications, height, weight, vision, etc. Your positive attitude will go a long way in this industry, best of luck to you.
