I don't see a major problem having one ear free when you're on the interstate. It's not all that hard going down a divided highway. But I'll tell you what happened to me when I was on the city streets.
I was on a good size 4 lane street that a lot of people drove down. One section you come up on has a block wall protecting the houses from the street. The wall stops only at the intersections but they are big intersections but still your vision is restricted. That was where the problem was. I was traveling in the right lane about 5 mph under the speed limit of 45mph. I came up to the intersection and was already checking for a stale green. The signal had just turned green for me and I had plenty of time since the crosswalk had the little figure of a pedestrian walking ( this was before they put the seconds in). I looked left then right and then WHOA an ambulance with the lights and siren going was in the far right cross street about to enter the intersection. I did not have any radios on just the AC and the windows up because it was so hot out. It was good that I was trained by some really good drivers many years before because their training has paid off many times. Thank you so much to the drivers at Richfield. So I was expecting anything could happen. I do believe that an inexperience driver would have seen the green and hammer through the intersection running into the emergency vehicle which would be a major problem with 12450 gallons loaded in the truck and trailer. Ever since then I always would crack the drivers side window just to hear better. Surface streets are much harder than the interstates for sure.

Drive with them in, Not my choice, It's your choice. Screw the law. If a serious incident occurs, More laws will be written and more will not follow. Rinse and repeat, It's your personal choice, turn those ear plugs up to 11. No snitch here, Have a good journey driver.
PS- You can still see the middle finger by 4 wheelers

Well, if there is a law against using ear plugs, I have never been on the receiving end of the enforcement of it in over 3 decades. Generally, I don't use ear plugs. But when the weather is better, I like driving with the door window down. Not that big of a deal on two lanes, but on interstate and metro freeways, that is a lot of noise coming in. I use ear plugs when I drive with the window down. Not sure how running down the road, Barney is going to notice anyway and really spend a lot of time worrying about it. There are many other things going on that make for higher revenue targets than whether I have ear plugs on while operating a commercial truck down a freeway with the window open.

If you can't fully hear everything around you then you should find another line of work or get a hearing aid.Suppose an ambulance is coming, you need to be able to hear that long before he needs to pass you same with a cop in hot pursuit or trains ect.

Patty, You can't persuade others to have common sense. Life happens. Others are free to do whatever they do. This is americAh

That's why they have many flashing lights. Even when I don't have the ear plugs in, I see the emergency vehicles long before I hear them.

There's also that first time though.I wish it was against the law to be hearing impaired when driving any kind of vehicle. Many companies during your physical has a forced whisper test. You fail that you fail the physical.
-
Laws whether nationwide or just trucking companies are so flawed. Not being able to hear to the fullest while driving should be against the law. What about headsets when listening to music while driving,is that illegal or not?

Really????
Then why in the world do we have to follow trucks and cars with the lights and sirens on and they do not pull over?
Then why in the world do they not pull over when we meet them on the road?
Then when we look as we pass we see wires hanging down from their ears. -
On the fence here, Wish no one would wear ear buds/plugs driving, But, it's their decision to not hear the faintest voice / mechanical failure / emergency vehicle approaching / RR crossing.
In the end, If it's determined driver is at fault wearing ear buds/plugs injuring/ death of a loved one. No doubt a civil lawsuit will happen and if a wearer of ear buds dies and loved ones lives with injuries, going after whomever issued this person a job and will seek damages from the family also.
Personal choice, not sure why any big rig driver would wear buds/plugs anyway, Same goes for a POV driver. Lawyers love this crap and would take on my case.
Personal choice. do as you want, crap does have circumstances.
I jam at home and listen to sound of the motor driving with a factory radio or no radio. That's my useless info. Not your nanny.gov --- Have a great situational awareness.
PS- we don't need more laws. we have enough. use common sense.Last edited: Apr 26, 2014
