I writ something up about this the other day it amazes me just how little any driver knows about sleep deprivation. What happens to us when we drive you'll also notice it happens when we sit and watch tv, cause your sitting there not really moving much your blood circulation slows down so what the brain does is it sends a signal to the body to go into rest/sleep mode, and you'll notice when your getting sleepy while your driving you stop park the truck up and try and sleep and you just can't sleep, it's because now you've gotten up started to move around your bloods now circulating again the other thing is people will load up big on carbs this is ok if your going off to pump some weights at the local gym or go play 4 quarters of NFL, it don't work well when your going to be sitting in a truck not using or burning many calories and you'll soon be off in the land of nod again. So like most drivers you'll go drink an expresso, or 2 cans of Red Bull to stay awake and so the cycle goes on and on.

    What about deprivation of
    • Common sense
    • Skills
    • Proper diet
Are these not important? These deprivations are rampant out here but nobody seems to see this as a problem because they keep getting hired.

I had exact same situation a while ago. Told my dispatch I was tired and I am going to bed. They said ok and sent another driver...

    Yes.

    Stop fighting it driver.

The body trends to shut down when we deny it proper rest. God forbid you push through, fall asleep at the wheel... God forbid.

Have your dispatcher reschedule the load. You ate the wrong roller dog at the truck stop and need some time to "work" some things out.

As a former safety officer use to tell the fleet...

    1. "You are the Captain of your ship (truck). You determine when you are able to drive."

    2. "There is no load so hot it won't cool off in a ditch."

Me: I have one life to live. Better late than never. Night, night!

If that keeps you up you’re a serious lightweight. I drink that crap right before bed. Helps me sleep. ;-)
