I only read the first page of this, but WHOEVER suggested random drug testing for people on government assistance (welfare, food stamps, low cost housing) is a genius!!!!!! The ONLY people that would appose it are people using! If it's true addiction: maybe let the government pay for rehab ONCE.... And then when they get caught dirty a second time: "do not pass go do not collect your $$$" you're off assistance and can't even QUALIFY to get assistance again for 20 years!!!!

You Americans and beating up on welfare people unreal they might be using drugs because of different social & mental & other reasons like maybe abused as a child no real support their whole life and get stuck with little prospects. Our crime in Australia is fairly low and mostly non violent now it's just my opinion but as a parent if I had no way of providing for my child I'd maybe sell drugs maybe end up using them getting in a shootout with police or competition. But with a basic level of unemployment benefits we have in aus that never becomes an issue in most unemployed people's lives hence lower crime less violence. And to say 1 rehab is ignorant drug use is a health issue do u smoke? Ever tried giving up it's pretty hard and only a small percentage stop the first time out it usually takes several tries with each time getting easier until finally u achieve your goal. Im also an ardent believer that what u do at home as long as it harms no one else is nobody's business that is why I think in aus our testing measures are much better with the saliva test that really tests are you under the influence of a drug now not did u smoke a bit of pot on your four week holiday three weeks ago. This world is becoming more and more a police state reaching further and further into people's lives that all being said I don't agree with people being out of it behind the wheel it's dangerous and irresponsible to say the least. But really what next a chip implanted at birth that can tell if you drunck alcohol or how many cigarettes you have smoked up till this date, did have a dirty thought lol etc. I think the testing should be is he driving under the influence or is he not, not what you did in your private time.

I would like to think that the people asking these questions are asking not b/c they're currently participating in activities that would cause them to fail, but rather maybe they changed their lives are wanting to make sure that their past doesn't come back to haunt them. It would be rather ignorant to even consider a career that is known for drug testing and be a current user. I think looking at what someone did 3 months, 6 months, a year ago is not indicative of who they are now or their habits, everyone deserves an opportunity to reinvent themselves, we all make stupid choices at times in our lives. What have you done in your past that you wouldn't want to come back and bite you in your A?...Just my 2 cents...

I had a couple of drug convictions 15 years ago, my boss gave me a chance and I have been driving for 7 years on a class B with no tickets or accidents. Obviously I have no problems with someone getting a second chance but it sure isn't going to happen over night.
