I think they do pull the hair Hense why they call it hair folical testing and not hair testing.
-
This question keeps coming up, so I read up on it a bit. The 3 companies that I looked at all stated that they "cut" enough hair to get 1.5" of hair for testing.

Because urine only has waste material. Mostly water, urea, metabolic byproducts, and all the stuff your liver said, "no thank you," to. And if your really unlucky, crystalized stones.
No cells. No DNA. Just chemicals....and protein, sometimes. -
From what I understand urine is not in itself a good place to get DNA from. However it is possible to extract DNA in some situations. So I imagine this one is a definite maybe not an outright No! I found this bit linked below and found the part about Mitochondrial DNA interesting. I was reading just the other day how they proved that the person buried in the grave marked Jessie James was a direct descendent of Jessie James mother by using Mitochondrial DNA. Thank you for that reply because when I googled this I discovered several things I was fascinated to read. I have heard of Mitochondrial DNA because of a situation that come up in my mothers side of the family. I am not getting into that on these boards. The 2nd link is to the Jessie James story.

He's not dirty for drugs. He's a serial rapist!
Hence the DNA concerns.
You're welcome, everybody.

Hey, I got a novel idea. Don't use the five prohibited things. Don't use alcohol on duty of just before going on duty. This way you don't have to worry about who does what or don't do this. Takes a lot of the stress of drug testing away.
-
I'm so glad I don't have to "study" for drug tests.
-
The problem is that if it isn't cut close to the scalp, or plucked, the results wouldn't show recent use. What has most people paranoid about hair tests is that it potentially can paint a picture about what you've been up to over a long period of time, not just what you did 3 to 30 days ago as urine tests do (depending on the substance).
