Yesterday I had two drops and a live load, total time just under six hours.
    Try that with reefer.

I kicked some holes in a case of county smoked hams so it would be rejected, then took it home.
    Try that with dry van.....lol

I can remember many live loads and unloads where I was in and out in under two hours. Yes, reefer can take some time. Nobody is trying to say otherwise. I'm just trying to get across the point that most of the better reefer carriers pay their drivers better. Some of those old war stories are just that, war stories.

Heck, I can't remember not having something in my tractor that came from a rejected product. I always had Hershey's and Mars candy in my tractor. Some places if you asked they had a room where they would put cases of candy where for some reason it could not be sold. Some General Mills places did that too.

Boxes full of vitamin supplements also; that stuff is expensive. Some places reject them due to being close dated.
One time had about 100 boxes of ice cream sandwiches. Fortunately, could swing by the house with those.
Many reefer drivers had one or two extra freezers in their house or on the back porch or in the garage.
Why throw that stuff in the dumpster; there's nothing wrong with the product at all.

For a newbie like the OP, one has to be very careful with lumper fees. They usually force you to get authorization, which could mean up to an hour or more sitting at that dock waiting for authorization. Then you have to keep a hawk eye on your check to make sure they reimburse you

I think some companies now authorize lumper fees and payment through the trucks onboard Elog computer system. One driver said he does it on his smartphone without having to make phone calls.

I delivered a load last week. I was proactive with the broker as I knew this particular receiver uses a lumper service.

The broker sent me a pre-authorized EFS code for $300, which was in excess of what I knew it would be. Load was taken off, received a text from the lumper service on my phone with the amount and a link to pay $95 where I enetered in the EFS code and within a few seconds received a paid in full receipt on my phone. Walked inside and retrieved the clean BOL and drove away. Easy peasy.
