okay here we go. I am just about to graduate from a tech run trucking school and have already acquired my CDL. I am very ready to get started going out over the road for long periods of time but I have a problem(s) holding all this up. I got a DUI 5 years ago when I was twenty one and last year in Texas I got popped for a reckless driving. Now all these recruiters who talk to us at school make it seem like this is horrible and no one is gonna touch me. They ran my MVR at school and not a #### thing came back on it. But they say they run some serious background checks on you when you get hired by a trucking company.

So with just that little history I hoped some of you out there who have had a DUI or reckless can give me some advice about what I should do.
If it aint showing up on my Tennessee MVR should I just put on my applications that everything is cool with my driving record????
I dont know so just give me a little advice. If you need more information just ask and I will tell you my situation. Wish me luck.

were you convicted of these charges or simply charged???

and have you gone to the DMV and tried to get a MVR?

also you may want to see if your state offers a background check you can payfor and own.....

Also you could contact police departments in locality where infractions happened and see if they could give you info.

Yeah I plead guilty too both. The DUI is off of my record after my probation ended about 2 years ago. So I think that has been wiped clean because the MVR I got is from the DOT and it is not on my record any longer. So I assume that it is not there. The reckless driving happened in Texas and I dont know why but it did not show up on the MVR.

I dont want to lie but I want to get started working soon. I just have no idea what route I should go. Honesty or kinda telling some of the truth.
I hear once you get 6 months to a year of OTR exp. no one is gonna really bother me anymore about my past as long as I do a good job and keep my nose clean.
    Any advice would be helpful

If this isn't showing up when you check your own MVR, I don't believe it will show up when a company does a check. I say this because I've been through this...sort of. When I lived in Virginia, I got a (minor) speeding ticket. Two years later I moved to Utah and got a job at a Utah trucking company. When the company ran my MVR, they saw the ticket listed. When I got a copy on my own, I also saw it listed.

Mind you this was over ten years ago, though. Things could have changed.

What I would do if I were in this situation is perform a "test" and see what happens. I'd apply with Swift or J.B. Hunt, two companies I really wouldn't want to work for, and omit the information from my application. This isn't the same thing as bold-face "lying" about it. If your MVR doesn't list an offense, you shouldn't volunteer it. It's none of anyone's business. You have a right to privacy, after all.

If Swift or J.B. notice it IS listed somewhere and call you on it, I'd THEN apply at the company I'd be interested in and tell them all about it up front. If Swift or J.B. don't notice it, it means the company you're interested in won't either. I'd omit the information from that application as well. Again, in that case, it'd be nobody's business but your own. The only problem is some companies don't do a thorough pre-orientation filter. They'll look at your MVR only when you're sitting in orientation. Of course you don't want to go that far, so make sure your "test" company will perform a filter check before asking you to come to an orientation. You want to know FOR SURE if the rotten company finds anything before filling out the application at the good company you are really interested in.

    Good luck.

A DUI 5 years ago is one thing. If you know you were in the wrong and stopped drinking. But last year you were reckless driving? Maybe you shouldn't be behind the wheel of a truck.

Dont take this as the gospel, but I was always told that in order to overcome a DUI you had to keep a clean record for 5 yrs.Might want to ck.that out.

That could be, Road Dog. I think I've heard this before. After a DUI, a GOOD company will want one to keep his nose clean.

You may have to wait four more years, Son_House. Be prepared for that possiblity.

First of all, be completely honest and up-front about it. If the fact is that it is NOT found in the course of a background investigation, and you HAVE disclosed it, you'll have a better chance than not of it or they being overlooked.

Nope. Insurance companies have ways of finding stuff that will not show up on MVR's. If THEY find it, and you have not disclosed it, kiss any chance of a job goodbye.

Yeap, the company's insurance carrier, or even a company insider, may find it on your criminal record. You should get a copy of this before calling up Swift or J.B. and asking for an application. If it's on your criminal record, you want to forget the "test" and go ahead and disclose it up front at the good company.
