Truck parking is a big deal in my life. The small town I live in, Rio Rancho, NM, has a covenant - "no truck parking on public roadways, or on private property unless surrounded by an 8' fence w/gated entry." Apparently the good people complained about trucks parking on the streets and getting in the way (dang ol' trucks) someone did a ballot item, and the vote went for exclusion. Democracy at work, right, but I can't park near my house. I choose to work for two companies in the last 2 1/2 years, terminals within 12 miles of my front door. I am looking around right now, in case I want to go O/O, but it's not good. There's a WalMart 1 mile away, and the parking is allowed, but I don't want to leave my main income generating tool sitting around with no security. I'm trying to reach the local Freightliner outlet, so far they've been pretty elusive. Good luck with your driving career.

Knuckle, No I haven't spoken to anyone yet except Tyson Foods. I'm 3 miles out of their hiring area but the recruiter said he could get it approved. They have a terminal in Sanford, NC. I'm PM as I begin to speak with these companies and get answers.

    Good Evening John =

These guys are right.... parking can be an issue. Being as I used to live in the Raleigh area, I can tell you that unless you have something at your house, you are going to have a challenge anyway. But you might could work out something with a self storage facility (there's one on New Bern Avenue, outside the beltline across from Northern Tool), or possibly work something out with someone out on Capital Blvd at Starmount Shopping Center. You could also check out Greenfield parkway outside of Garner (xt 306 - 70 east.... first off ramp)

OR, like the guys say.... go with a company that has a local terminal.

Let me ask you a question.... are you set on being a flatbedder? or are you just in awe of TMC's trucks (which by the way are BEAUTIFUL!!!) There are a lot of other options out there if you are not locked into Mav or TMC. You are in a great location and there are a TON of freightlanes that run through your back yard. You are sitting on a lot of options you might not even know exist

Scooter, thanks for the response. And no, I'm not locked into flatbedding but must admit I like the idea of making decent money, getting some home time, and from what I understand a compnay like TMC has very good training. My school, Roadmasters out of Dunn, NC has really pushed for me to apply at TMC among others and they seem solid. As for Maverick they kind of fall under the decent money, home time and then the terminal out of Laurinburg, NC. That's why I mentioned them. Acutally here is my current short list of companies I'm going to apply to:

    TMC
    Maverick
    CT Transportation
    Cheeseman
    Tyson Foods
    Trimac
    Tidewater Transit
    Cargo Transport

I'm not done with my research and still have to look at to determine if I want to apply with:

    Southeastern Frieght Lines
    H.O. Wolding
    Halvor Lines
    Decker Truck Lines
    Cypress Truck Lines
    Howard Transportation

Of course any and all suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance!!

Here are some links if you want to research Tyson here in the forum and speak to other Tyson drivers.

From what I've read on here...cross Cargo Transport off your list. EVERYONE (newbie or old salt) deserve a lot better pay and treatment than Cargo is known to offer.

It may be a really long shot.....But john you've over-looked a place right under your nose in Garner....GSF ( Golden State Foods ) I worked there for over 30 years , but they usually don't hire rookies , but it's worth a try. You might see if they need a yard jockey to begin with. (may get your foot in the door) Also if you have the endorsements ( tanker / haz-mat ) there are tons of fuel haulers in the Raleigh area as well as just down the road in Kinston , NC there is TWT....

I can't park where I live so it is nice to have terminal about 50 miles from home.

Tony, thanks for the information! I'm getting my haz-mat during school but they didn't mention the tanker endorsement but I want to get it. The truth be told I'd like to go OTR to get the experience for a year or so then go local.
