The stereo in my 08 Freightliner doesn't have an Aux jack for my iPhone and I haven't purchased a decent set of speakers yet.
Is it legal to have earbuds in while I'm driving?

Depends on what state your in and who you ask. I've heard in most states it isnt legal. Its kinda a stupid law. Can you hear ay better with the truck speakers blaring then if you have ear buds? If close to your chest they could not possibly get in the way of driving.
A new radio cost less then 100 bucks, not a huge investment. -
If its not it should be. Here are a few alternatives.

I checked into it awhile back out of curiousity, some states its legal, some states you can use only one, and most states it is illegal alltogether

you could get a one ear bluetooth...the higher end ones can play music.

That's what I thought.
It's really loud in the truck and even a $40 iHome speaker doesn't do the trick for music but it's fair for talk radio.
I am looking into a high end Bluetooth headset so I can talk on the phone. Maybe I'll just wait for that. -
Need to really forget that ear phone stuff and get a decent radio ....WITH THAT CRAP COVERING YOUR EARS YOU'LL BE AT A DISADVANTAGE TO HEAR ANY EMERGENCY VEHICLES OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING FOR. It's not about your comfort , it's about being safe. Later on you'll be assigned a better truck probably that won't be so loud...but you'll not have been involved in an accident trying to fix your headset.......Think about it...think about all the other folks using the roads besides your own wants....pay attention and drive , that's what your paid to do............. not listen to music!

Having been in Emergency services for 13 years, I agree that ear buds/ ear phones while driving are a bad idea and should be illegal, bluetooth earpiece or one sided headset are fine are far as I'm concerned as long as it is for communication, not for listening to music all day. It is very frustrating to be driving an ambulance to a CPR in progress call or an engine to a structure fire with possible persons trapped and have a hard time getting past a car or truck and then find out they have earbuds in and had no idea you where behind them with lights and sirens going.

I didn't know Buick made trucks you could hear anything but wind and rain and engine in. Those must be nice. Me, I've been in a few dozen Volvos and a Freightliner and I've never once heard sirens that weren't right next to me, radio or not, unless my window was open. Well, it's about 34 with freezing rain right now, so sorry Mr. Ambulance Driver, you can make all the noise you want and I won't hear you. Fortunately for you and the person you're trying to save, I was gifted with an extraordinary ability called EYESIGHT and if I'm truly a safe and responsible driver, I'm LOOKING AROUND and CHECKING MY MIRRORS for anything and everything, including emergency vehicles, that I would have to react to. A safe and responsible driver should see you long before he's capable of hearing you. If you're relying on sound to spot emergency vehicles, you need to stop staring mindlessly forward and start looking around before you cause some real problems.
That said, there are a lot of noises you do need to be aware of. Tires blowing out, RPMs for shifting if you can do it by ear, engine trouble, and other things. Get an FM transmitter for $20 bucks and learn to use it. You can tune it to any radio station not in use and it'll broadcast your music from your phone to the radio. I like the little oval shaped ones that take a AAA battery so you don't have to plug them in.biggare1980 Thanks this. -
You can get an fm modulator they are cheap
