Ear buds bad idea and unsafe
-
Dumb idea.
Hold off and get yourself into an audiosource or the like.
You'll survive. -
I never did understand the whole "I've been doing this longer so I'm magically right and you're automatically wrong and here's how long I've been doing this to prove it" mentality some folks have. Especially when you touch on highly subjective matters such as this one! Maybe you have some kind of heightened supertrucker hearing ability that only gets turned on at 2 million miles, but I don't. I don't think most others do, either, because I have especially keen hearing (as tested). If I'm merely "above average" in the realm of hearing then you, sir, must be a god amongst men. I'm not going to argue against your points because they're subjective opinion and nothing more, but I will congratulate you on being an exceptional example of our fine human race. Keep on truckin'!

Ear buds are a real grey area in the law. Distracted driving? It is a real good excuse for a bored trooper to pull you over and find something to boost his Christmas bonus.

There are headphones that you can wear around your neck like speakers, so you can clearly hear the music without blasting it, and you can still hear the traffic too. Here's what I'm talking about; http://www.amazon.com/DuoPlay-Over-...d=1386532225&sr=8-6&keywords=flips+headphones

The whole point for you newbs is this; you learn as you go, hopefully, time and experience go hand-in-hand. Part of that learning is experiencing things. Now, if a newb is wearing earbuds, he's not going to learn what a bad hanger bearing sounds like; what a low tire sounds like; or the many other possibly subtle sounds a truck makes when something is going wrong. Even road conditions, ever notice how quiet a road gets when it's slowly turned to ice? All he's going to be hearing is some stupid crappy headbanger music and not have a clue in the world something is going wrong with his truck. And there he'll be broken down or in a ditch somewhere waiting for the tow truck and somebody wondering why in the hell he didn't hear such-and-such going bad on him. This isn't a #### vacation out here, especially in the winter, a person better KNOW what's going on with his rig.Numb and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this.

What puzzles me is why do people assume that it is loud with individual ear phones or 'buds" in their ears. I sometimes use those foam ear plugs because of the noise of the truck actually diminishes my hearing after a while, I end up with white noise. And with my ear 'buds' in my ears while I am loading or waiting, I can hear a lot more of what's going on like a siren or horn or those back up warning noise makers on forklifts because I don't have to have the volume up, it is set just enough to hear but with the radio up loud enough to understand people speaking (I have a hearing problem that has to do with understanding speech but not hearing sounds), I can not hear a siren and have a hard time hearing a horn and forget the forklift backup alarm.

Not trying to prove anything or say anything about being a "super trucker " as you call it man. But as you get older and more experienced in this field you'll come to understand my comments. Hearing is not a subjective matter...you either hear something or you don't , that's pretty substantive (not subjective )to me and lots of other veterans of this industry . We live and breathe by being able to to do it without anything getting in the way. As far as anything being turned off , or on at the 2 million mile mark , I don't remember anything specific , or at the 3 million mile mark either...maybe when you get there you'll see something that I missed. I'm going on 70 now and I think I've learned a thing or 2 in that time , But the main thing I've learned is to not try and argue with a man who knows just a little more about a subject than me....You win...sorry I stuck my old nose into this subject.....

Thank you. That's exactly the point I was trying to make with my first post.
