I have seen this in the west too.
-
A lot do it.
It's actually the way to go if you're tall and windy. heavier weight.DDlighttruck Thanks this. -
Buddy of mine does that on all his trailers. He drops and hooks a couple times a day, so he feels it's faster to leave the straps with the trailer. Not real sure why it would a more regional this g though. The local companies leave the straps rolled up on the winches on pretty much all their trailers I've noticed.
-
We use straps daily, multiple loads. We leave ours on out of convince, and timing. Throw them and roll. We run the same freight everyday as well.
-
Isn't it hard to wind them back up? Seems like you need 3 hands. 2 to turn the tool and 1 to guide the strap?
-
I notice a lot of Quebec truckers do this as well. It's efficient if it's a short throw across, there is less to wind up the way they do it. If it's a tall load I don't see the advantage. I never liked how they would be covered in ice and road crap. I prefer tossing the strap versus trying to throw the chain across.
Hegemeister Thanks this. -
....For those of you that use "the tool". I never did.
If I were still skateboarding to this day I probably would be by now though. -
I can see the points you guys are making. My thoughts are personally I wouldn't want to throw the hook over the load and chance knocking a light out or something. And also with all the excess around the winch wouldn't be like tightening the strap around a big sponge? The reason I brought this up was because a guy from back east had the straps with the short piece of chain on them and a mill I load at out here wouldn't let him throw the chains over the load.

The company I used to work for had steps and we always left the straps on the winches. We hauled multiple loads a day and it was much easier and quicker than pulling them. The could get kinda dirty in the winter but other than that it was fine.

I have seen the result of some pretty nasty winches because of doing that. Strap gets wet and holds the moisture against the steel. Main reason that I don't leave them on there.
Hegemeister, MACK E-6, DDlighttruck and 4 others Thank this.
