Thanks. If chunks of metal are floating in the oil it can jam up slide clutches and it could be a combination of bearing and teeth off gears.

    mladen86 Thanks this.

OK but I would expect the magnets in the bottom of the case to catch the pieces large enough to cause that problem. How would that cause the speedometer to bounce in neutral at idle?

The magnet will only hold a small amount of material. When teeth come off the magnet is useless. Metal will get stuck to the magnet in the speed-o sensor and make it do all kinds of goofy things if it’s a rtx or rto trans if eaton. If FRO eaton it’s an external sensor and won’t be affected by metal.

The front gear in the main box is the countershaft drive gear.
If all the outer teeth strip off the only gears left in a 10 speed direct are 5th and 10th. If the inner teeth strip off 5th and tenth are lost.
In a 10 over the front sliding clutch shifts rearward for 5th and 10th. The corners on the sliding clutches and mating gears are inclined to round off in both versions in tenth gear.
Before he lost 10th gear it was hard to shift. Made a lot of noise. Speedometer moved at idle in neutral.
I thank maybe the rear mainshaft bearing was losing some ball bearings like I have seen happen. This would allow the mainshaft to drop down some. The normally free floating gears on the mainshaft would be scrubbing on the countershaft gears. Along with the noise the shaft would vibrate back and forth. This would transfer to the output shaft and could cause and speedometer needle movement. The already worn tenth gear and sliding clutch went out because of the increased clearance from the mainshaft moving back some.
Maybe he will let us know.

Can’t tell you anything until 3rd.
    Truck is sitting parked.
Few months back shop told me that there is some free play on output shaft.
I told them to fix it but they decided against it,coz it wasn’t that bad at the moment.
By the time i got to the yard, transmission was less noisy and speedo needle movement went away

    BoxCarKidd and SAR Thank this.
