I've been driving a eaton 10 since I been driving. Now I'm interested in buying a truck with a 13 speed Eaton trans. For the guys that have experience with the 13 speed what gear do you start off when you're loaded and empty? With the 10 speed I always start in 3rd when loaded or 5th when im empty

As far as start-off gear chosen, there really won't be any difference in 10 or 13. They're both geared more or less the same in the lower gears. You'll grow to love the 13 inside of a week, especially if you run heavy a lot.

I ran a 13 for a year in a T680 and loved it. Always started out in 3rd. My truck didn't have a governor so I ran the speed limit in the western states. It was nice.

You can’t seem to drive a 10 speed alone, what makes you think that you can move up to drive a 13 ?
Isn’t the number shift patterns engrave somewhere in your truck ? Usually on the shifter or somewhere on the dash. The number “1” and so on is how you start of. I have been driven since 1979 and have always started out in “1” gear regardless of bobtailing, empty, or Loaded. Maybe that is why my clutches always just about last forever. Driving the truck correctly, all the components last a long time driving correctly.
You must be a company driver......

It depends on the situation. There is no one gear fits all.

Heck in racing situations Ive roared off in 5th high going to 9th high and waited to see if I won or lost bobtail. (This was the last of the truly fast tractors before all this computer crap)

You will like the 13. More gears more options, less work.

I own my own truck and its so cringe worthy seeing company drivers every day starting out in any gear other than first out on the road. And your saying you start out in 3rd while loaded? 5th while emoty? Holy cow!!
I start out in first empty and loaded. But hey, its my truck though and im payin the bills for wear and tear. I have an 18 speed btw

I float the gears and when empty sometime skip a gear here and there but when I start out I am in 1st gear.

Hell buddy if you start on the high side of 5th in a 10 speed, you could start off in high 7 with the 13. Just hit the hammer to the floor and slip the clutch till shes nice and hot. Just bustin balls. if you indeed buy your own truck, maybe you will respect it more than the company truck. Always start off in 1st loaded. Unloaded, im guilty of sometimes starting off in second but not much. Whether loaded or unloaded, you should never have to use throttle letting the clutch out becuase you are geared low enough. Kinda sounds like you are are throttling the crap out of your company truck to get the wheels rollling and clutch out. Your gonna smoke the clutch and warp the flywheel. And its not good on your transmission either
