TRUE auto meaning?? Hydraulic automatic? They can't handle years of 80k hauling. That's why you never see them much. And forget mountains and forget good jakes.

Autoshifting Manuals are getting to be pretty awesome. The DT12 is probably the best rated non-manual to ever grace trucks. The iShift by Volvo is looking to be a long-term contender as well.

The older 3-pedal autoshift manuals are plagued with issues. The even older "original" autoshifts, think late 90's-early 2000's would self destruct around 250k miles.

To the OP: You're in Victoria and going to.... Vancouver I assume? It's a nice ride, enjoy the view and forget the cost. But... a 2008 auto, regardless of what it is, wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. I'd rather pay a bit more and get something with the DT12 or a Volvo with iShift than hope the old auto stays together.

Edit: The transmission number you have matches up to an Eaton 18-speed Auto-Shift Manual with a clutch for start/stop.

    I would avoid.

True automatic meaning torque converter and reliability with a simple filter service every 25k miles.
Eaton ultra shift has blown for years and still does.
I said the d12 drom detroit and i shift from volvo were serviceable transmissions. Serviceable, not preferred by myself.

We run a few trucks in oilfield service with Allisons behind a Cummins ISX. Jakes will very literally put you into the seatbelt, and we are quite often in excess of 90K gross (6 axle straight truck). 24/7/365 operation, no significant troubles other than the occasional wiring harness. They may not be optimal for OTR, but for heavy vocational/short range continuous usage in harsh offroad conditions, they're better than you might expect.

I have a eaton autoshift, no more issues than any other. I find the guys that complain about autos are going to complain about autos. usually the guys that have a huge ego or the guys who have been driving so long they shift while sleeping.

    Eaton is ok
allison is a tank of a tranny
    ishift is my favorite

On day 4 of breakdown in Tulsa OK... 13 speed Ultrashift, Main shaft speed sensor went out. Guy came to repair it but apparently had no real experience with this and in the process of changing the part managed to screw something up pretty bad. I know a few bolts were broke and had to be extracted.

Ended up towed to Peterbilt shop, but of course it was a Holiday weekend. Hopefully rolling out again today.

Point is, when there is a problem with it, there is not a lot of familiarity with these among the general shop personal. Just another facet to consider.

As far as driving, in cities and traffic it is nice, on a highway, once you're up to top gear, what's the difference anyway, yes it does roll back, and backing is a whole new experience, but mountain driving is what I hate the most in it. I usually switch to manual and shift it myself.
