Can someone tell me if there is a trick to removing this retainer cap? All videos I've seen of similar transmissions show this cap coming right off after removing the bolts. Maybe having to tap the shaft side to side a little but I cannot budge this thing. I've even tried to twist it first thinking it's rusted at the seems. It just will not pull out. What am I missing please? See picture attached

If you remove the bell housing it will come on off.
If you take a course thread tap ( 7/16 ? ) and thread it into two holes 180 degrees apart. Install two bolts and go back and forth it will come out but kind of mucks up the threaded holes and you have to retap them.
Thread them and use two slide hammers or two bolts installed with lady foot - roll bars under the bolt heads. No damage that way.W923 and skallagrime Thank this. -
Along the lines of BoxCarKid's thinking, I think I instead would try using the original bolts 180° apart to attach a chain, and use a cheap 2 jaw puller from Harbor Freight hooked to the chain and pushing against the input shaft if needed. No tapping that way. A little heat from a small propane torch on a 1lb can would help, I imagine.

And maybe just using a small hammer along the caps end to break the corrosion will work, too.

That input shaft is junk. Hit it with a 4lbs hammer on the end. Buy a Eaton install kit and put new parts in.
BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
The Eaton input shaft kit comes with the bellhousing gasket. Its not a big job to remove the bellhousing.
If you don't want to drain the transmission tilt the front up on the jack. -
I did not blow the picture up until you said the shaft is junk.Yes it is. Can you really get the cover out of the bell housing that way not talking about getting the front bearing out?jamespmack Thanks this.

Just take a punch and tap the holes side to side, eventually it will break free. I've done it many times that way.
BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
Take the bell housing off first. You will need a new gasket for it as well.
Bearing cap can be easily accessed after that. Then there is a c clip holding the inputshaft in. Quick youtube search will show you how to pull all that -
Should. It's easier with clutch housing off, and I like to replace that gasket anytime the trans is out.
Reusing that input shaft with a new clutch is asking for problems.BoxCarKidd Thanks this.
