Good Morning,
I have a 99 volvo with an eaton fuller 10 speed. It shifts smooth as butter 1st thru 5th and 7th thru 10th but doesn't want to go into 6th gear. If I start off in 6th it's fine but don't want to go into it from 5th gear. I've been given a few diagnosis. 1st I was told that means it needs a transmission, next I was told that it sounds like the Hi/Lo Clutch on the back of the transmission, finally, I was told it sounds like a synchro. I'm a little confused about it sounding like a synchro because I thought these trannys didn't have a synchro. Can someone please steer me in the right direction.
thank you

Straight 10 not a super 10 I assume. I'm not knowledgeable on the specifics but yeah I believe it has a synchro for when you shift low to high range and vise versa. Usually when a synchro goes bad it will grind when you shift range, but not always both ways, might shift low to high fine but grind high low. Or vice-versa.
Your problem I would guess maybe a bent shift fork. Or the slider could be bad too.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along hereBoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
You can't let those Trans. Pop out of gear from not getting them all the way in gear before you get on the fuel pedal again? You can drain the gear oil and look in the end of mag. Drain Plugs. for chunks of the small pieces

Check air pressure and that the air cylinder are good. -
yes the auxiliary has synchros. Not the man gear box.
Second, your truck is ruined now because you like to start off in 6th. On a 10 speed you can start in 2nd or 3rd if you want, but never 4th or 6th on the high side. -
Do you preselect the range while still in low side then go into and through neutral to high side or do you post select after stick has been pulled into neutral? The first way is the right way but I know guys do it the other way out of bad habit. It will not change ranges at the correct time that way. It may take a very long time and many many miles to score the syncro so they don’t think what they are doing hurts anything.

Maybe you have a 9 speed and not realize it . Check the tag on the side of the trans. Maybe in the trucks 20+ year life it was swapped out.
