From what I understand it won't take effect until April 2011 now but I was speaking to a trucker today that said possibly 200,000 truckers will come off of the road because of the new rules due to their records going back 3 years...Any truth to this?

FMSCA claims they won't be firing drivers. They'll let the companies do the dirty work.
Plus companies won't inherit points with a new driver. So I expect easy firings with new blood replacing the bad.

But will they hire a drivers with mega-points?

Before I started driving school I did a lot of reading about CSA 2010. Since then, I haven't really kept up with it so, if I err in what I say, others will correct me.

Drivers with suspect records will come off the road because, now that drivers' records are more accessible, insurance companies will pressure carriers to get rid of drivers who have shown that they will not abide by the regulations (by the way, there are NO new regulations, just new record keeping and enforcement).

Owner/operators who "pay their own way" insurance-wise will likely find it difficult to obtain insurance, either because the cost is prohibitive or because reputable insurance companies simply will not take the risk.

These are just a couple of observations. Keep in mind that I am a rookie driver and I don't understand the inner workings of the industry. It just makes sense to me that, now that there is so much press and so much pressure (from public interest groups), insurance companies and carriers are tightening up to avoid preventable exposure to lawsuits.

Probably half that IMO. No one really knows right now, I believe.

Currently score is being kept. I got my own PSP off the web and saw three stops from 07 and 08.

My carrier says 85 pts. is the line in the sand. He also says 176 of his 319 drivers would have a problem if in effect right now. He will hire 2 people to handle appeals. One for I/C and one for company.

Outlaws and bootleggers will be sidelined. Carriers won't be able to use them due to points. IMO this is the same as getting a ticket....get too many and no job..... same with points.

The real issue is the formula.....I saw another post in here for a seat belt violation, a 9? x 2 severity x a 3 the first year? Even if severity is a 1 in my example that's a 27. How many 27's can you afford when the cap is 85 ?

It's no secret that if your scaled and checked, he's gonna get something....you will get points. The only defense seems to be not to run at all.

I'm thinking that I'll run at night. Still scales and bears but fewer and they can't see as much. Add in the night shift is usually lazy and well you see where I'm going.

Too bad we ain't in ol' Mexico. Bribes (Mordida) are routine down there.

Happens up here too, but nowhere near as often. CSA2010 is a moneymaker for the cops and the DOT, but it wont do much for truck safety, IMO.

Nothing has before, except for better, more modern trucks, and drivers who got paid and laid well (sleep, that is). :biggrin_255:

from what had been "originally said", was the CSA was "supposed" to go back 36 months (3 years) with the prior 12 months when CSA comes on line, giving the drivers DOUBLED POINTS.....so say CSA comes online, April 2, 2011, and a driver got a ticket (say) on December 24,2010......well that's with in the 12 months PRIOR to CSA coming online, so that would mean the driver got DOUBLE POINTS......right out of the box.....!!!!

as far as how many drivers will "come off the road", this is only trucker's talk, as no one knows........so do not even venture to guess that. just let the other trucker speak his piece.......

owner-operators will get hit twice.......once as the owner of the company, and then once as the driver. i suspect there will be that "intervention" going on MORE for owner-operators in the beginning, then drop off.

ok, YOUR carrier says 85 points..........but as of today.......no one knows of any "cut off point in the sand" written by the CSA...... who knows, the CSA may say the "cut off" will be 50 points, maybe 25, maybe 100, maybe 200........who knows......??

so it's YOUR company taking the initiative to set the numbers.

in the end, i have said this so many times, it just isn't funny (not that it ever was), and that is, "as a profession, we ALLOWED this to happen, as WE DID NOTHING to clean up our act"...

"we allowed self righteous public citizens groups, law makers, police agencies, insurance companies, to DO THIS FOR US"......

"so many of us sat back in those cushy truck stop dining room tables seats, or the comfort of our rigs, and we all talked about "doing something", but when we left our little discussion circle, nearly everyone one of us said, *i ain't got time for this shiot, i'll let the other guy handle it*"......and "the other guy" DID HANDLE IT......!!!

now we only have ourselves to blame........for me, i'm an instructor, I'LL HAVE A JOB.......wanna know why.......?? if and when many drivers are fired off.......??? new ones will be needed, and 'ill be secure in knowing i can provide the fresh bodies for it......as MY license WILL BE CLEAN from any DOT infractions......and should i have an accident or ticket in my 4 wheeler........?? so what.......those ARE NOT counted as it's NOT a CMV......

YOU ALL NEED to drive properly, safely, and DO THINGS RIGHT, if you want to continue working.........pure, plain and simple.........

I found this on the CSA 2010 site. I can see a lot of firing and hiring going on.

"Carriers will not inherit any of a newly hired driver's past violations. Only those inspections that a driver receives while driving under a carrier's authority can be applied to a carrier's Safety Measurement System."

Only problem is that the driver will not lose the points between carriers so they may not be interested in hiring them.
